i always find myself losing steam when it comes to an actual story. i can do characters that i really like, but i just can't write anything worthwhile around them.

Perhaps that is a sign you should be focusing on the story and then writing characters to fit it? Work in reverse.

you misunderstood. i didn't mean that i try to write a story around characters i made up beforehand. i meant that the story around them is crap, but they are cool (at least to me. maybe not so much to others).

Ah ok. I guess I am of the mindset that great characters are actually more important than the story. A couple awesome characters chasing a MacGuffin is usually a whole lot more entertaining than bad characters in an amazing story.

Possibly, or they are just better at selling their stuff. If it is like anything else, writing is about 25% and selling your writing is the rest.

Possibly, or they are just better at selling their stuff. If it is like anything else, writing is about 25% and selling your writing is the rest.

sure, they are more successful too. but i meant the finished product as a viewer or reader. i'm not an studio head or a publisher. etc. so yeah. just talking about from my own perspective.

yeah, that's the most important. if you're doing something that you don't like, start a different story and incorporate more of yourself, rather than trying to make it for whatever audience.
