I really don't understand why we don't just have independent panels determining voting districts. Partisanship will creep in naturally in any case but it's wild that gerrymandering is just an accepted part of the game.

If Democrats proposed that, Republicans would fight it, because it would decrease their power. If Republicans proposed it, the Democrats would do the same. It's a common sense solution, much like ranked choice voting, but no one is going to go out of their way and seriously fight for it. Status quo for the win.

I don't think they've ever claimed to be leftist. Both parties are centrist, though you wouldn't know it from their loudest supporters.
