Rank the horror works of Stephen King (movies)

Post by Jigsaw »

So, to clarify, we're speaking strictly horror adaptations of King's works, not counting sequels to Children of the Corn/The Mangler/Sometimes They Come Back due to the fact they're not based off a King novel or story.

1. Storm of the Century (1999)
2. The Stand (1994)
3. Creepshow (1982)
4. The Mist (2007)
5. The Langoliers (1995)
6. Carrie (2002)
7. Children of the Corn (1984)
8. Salem's Lot (2004)
9. The Dead Zone (1983)
10. The Shining (1997)
11. Misery (1990)
12. Thinner (1996)
13. The Dark Half (1993)
14. Firestarter (1984)
15. It (1990)
16. Desperation (2006)
17. Cujo (1983)
18. Carrie (1976)
19. Secret Window (2004)
20. Children of the Corn (2009)
21. Cat’s Eye (1985)
22. The Shining (1980)
23. The Mangler (1995)
24. Maximum Overdrive (1986)
25. Sleepwalkers (1992)
26. The Tommyknockers (1993)
27. Silver Bullet (1985)
28. Pet Sematary (1989)
29. Bag of Bones (2011)

Below are films that I've seen but overall forget.

Needful Things (1993)
Graveyard Shift (1990)
Riding the Bullet (2004)
Sometimes They Come Back (1991)

1. Kubrick's The Shining

2-whatever: The rest

What is wrong with you people... The Shining is one of the greatest pieces of cinema and some of you have it below such garbage as the 1997 adaptation, and bloody Cujo... Losing hope with you people.

It is

But The Shining is a masterpiece.

It's barely a fair comparison because of the skill at which that film was crafted when you compare to some of the dross people are listing.

the shining was very well crafted. if we're talking technical merits, then the shining would probably be near the top always. but my list was ranked as per favorites, and nothing else. the shining is not a favorite of mine.

Plus The Shining was more Kubrick than King. Most of the King Substance was cut for Kube's style. Basically it's American Sushi :p

It's a fair point, it was perfected away from the modest source material. could argue that makes it not a King adaptation. Would accept this as well.

Interesting that his best movie adaptation isn't even horror.

Not a fan of Kubrick's style. Too surreal.

True of The Shining and in some ways of 2001/Clockwork. Definitely not the case for ones like Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, or some of the earlier works.

These are the only King films I thought were worth a damn.

The Stand (1994)
Creepshow (1982)
The Mist (2007)
The Langoliers (1995) Fucking Balki kills it.
Misery (1990)
It (1990)
Cat’s Eye (1985)
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Silver Bullet (1985)

I used to like more, but most are pretty bad after rewatching. And fuck the Shining.
