Ballsacks! I did that too about a month ago. We got new bank cards in the mail, forgot that we already activated them. Had the old one in my wallet. Got about $120 worth of groceries. Stood in line forever....and then my card was declined. I only live a couple of blocks away and they saved my purchases.....but still ....there were so many people in line behind me. I felt like a jackass.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Grabbed the wrong credit card when I took off to the grocery store. That sucked. Had to walk all the way back home to grab the right one and walk back. Luckily they kept all my stuff in produce storage to wait for me so I don't have to regrab everything.

Captain Marvel (regarding the refugee/skrull thing ... apologies if that's spoiled, I think the girl power/feminism is weaved just fine throughout so it doesn't feel heavy-handed to me)zombie wrote:it's not like a monologue-y diatribe-y type of way or anything. give me an example of a film you see that in?DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I don't see that. Crash is a big one at being heavy handed, beating its audience over the head with its message, to the point of beating a dead horse (I still think it's a good movie, but damn).
I guess how else I would describe it is when its message feels desperate, as well as shoe-horned in. It's obvious and constantly ramming it down your throat, taking you away from the narrative, that's what I consider heavy handed.
I don't see that with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest. Am I using the term wrong?

Re: March 24th 2019
Definition of heavy-handed
1 : CLUMSY
2 : OPPRESSIVE, HARSH
Huh. I guess in a way I'm close? I would describe the forced/shoehorning/desperate as "clumsy". Wouldn't have been the word that comes to mind, but I can relate them together. Don't think I was on base with the 2nd definition.

R.I.P. Larry Cohen. Directed The Stuff and Hell Up in Harlem two of my favorites.

i don't know which, but one of us seems to be using it wrong. to me, heavy handed is different than shoe horned. but it was pretty obvious and not subtle in cuckoo's nest. but it was set up through the whole film, so not shoe horned either.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Captain Marvel (regarding the refugee/skrull thing ... apologies if that's spoiled, I think the girl power/feminism is weaved just fine throughout so it doesn't feel heavy-handed to me)zombie wrote:it's not like a monologue-y diatribe-y type of way or anything. give me an example of a film you see that in?DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I don't see that. i haven't seen any of your examples, but the skrull thing was not a spoiler, as i've already heard about it. don't know how it's executed in the film though.
Re: March 24th 2019
I thought the refuge part of Cpt. Marvel was more stupid than heavy handed but definitely inserted to please the SJW crowd.

jason would almost certainly (and probably has before) describe wonder woman as heavy handed the way you're using it. do you find that to be the case?

Since the second definition involves "oppressive" and that's Nurse Ratched to a T, I guess "heavy handed" works too. *shrug*zombie wrote:i don't know which, but one of us seems to be using it wrong. to me, heavy handed is different than shoe horned. but it was pretty obvious and not subtle in cuckoo's nest. but it was set up through the whole film, so not shoe horned either.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Captain Marvel (regarding the refugee/skrull thing ... apologies if that's spoiled, I think the girl power/feminism is weaved just fine throughout so it doesn't feel heavy-handed to me)zombie wrote:it's not like a monologue-y diatribe-y type of way or anything. give me an example of a film you see that in?DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I don't see that. I think it was a lazy cramming metaphor for muslim refugees. Made me roll my eyes and think "oh, that's timely..." Could've easily left all the woe-is-us-we-don't-have-a-home-stuff out and the twist still would've worked.

Nope. I thought it was pretty smooth throughout. I just think the 3rd act got a little weak due to underdeveloped main villain and "heavy handed" (aka, clumsy & oppressive) CGIzombie wrote:jason would almost certainly (and probably has before) describe wonder woman as heavy handed the way you're using it. do you find that to be the case?

Got a lot of room freed up on a credit card. Looking into getting a bike again.
Re: March 24th 2019
yeah, the reveal of the villain definitely could have been set up to be more satisfying and not just out of nowhere. that was kind of shoe horned. and the cgi was kind of awful. i actually would have preferred the other villains to get an actual pay off, rather than what we got. *shrug*DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Nope. I dug Wonder Woman. Chris Pine is the only one who annoyed me in that movie. Isn't it ironic, don't ya think?zombie wrote:jason would almost certainly (and probably has before) describe wonder woman as heavy handed the way you're using it. do you find that to be the case?

good to hear. although i don't recall anything offensive about pine in the film. do you like him in general though?Jason wrote:I dug Wonder Woman. Re: March 24th 2019
Sorry, misinterpreted what you were trying to imply what was "heavy handed" in it in the way I was using it before (i.e. feminism). Yeah, the handling of the main villain would fall into my "shoe horn/forced" version of Heavy Handed.zombie wrote:yeah, the reveal of the villain definitely could have been set up to be more satisfying and not just out of nowhere. that was kind of shoe horned. and the cgi was kind of awful. i actually would have preferred the other villains to get an actual pay off, rather than what we got. *shrug*DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Nope. Re: March 24th 2019
unless this some kind of weird "guys have to stick together" thing, i think it's more than fair to not find chris pine to work for you, as an actor.Jason wrote:Nah, I've just never been a fan of his.zombie wrote:good to hear. although i don't recall anything offensive about pine in the film. do you like him in general though?Jason wrote:I dug Wonder Woman.
