It's actually not a common perception. She's got that Oscar win, but it seems like she's going down that same boat as Halle Berry and Gweneth Paltrow, where it may have just been a fluke.zombie wrote:you don't have to. that's the common perception whether you feel that way or not. you don't like the godfather. i don't like the shining. both are held as greats, regardless of us.Jason wrote:I wouldn't call Brie a great actress, by any stretch. i haven't seen anyone debate room being overrated, or her being overrated in it. but possible that i've missed it.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:It's actually not a common perception. I think Halle was great in Monster's Ball. Still wouldn't call her a great actress. Hence possible fluke. It just happens.zombie wrote:i haven't seen anyone debate room being overrated, or her being overrated in it. but possible that i've missed it.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:It's actually not a common perception. I've seen Brie in both Skull Island and Captain Marvel now. She's just decent so far. I've yet to see Room, but taking that off the table, she's just been serviceable. I don't see anyone calling her a great actress either (outside the troll-ridden Reddit type forums, that would bring her average way down with people who don't even watch her work).
Re: March 28th 2019
i guess anything is possible. haven't seen room, but she was great in short term 12 as i recall. though that needs a revisit.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I think Halle was great in Monster's Ball. maybe it's a jennifer lawrence type of thing. then. being critically lauded in a lot of work, but also having the x-men stuff and passengers on her resume. i don't know.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I've seen Brie in both Skull Island and Captain Marvel now. Lawrence is still pretty critically lauded, but yeah her half-assness with Xmen is obvious and everyone knows it.zombie wrote:maybe it's a jennifer lawrence type of thing. then. being critically lauded in a lot of work, but also having the x-men stuff and passengers on her resume. i don't know.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I've seen Brie in both Skull Island and Captain Marvel now. a couple points higher than room, on rt. (98 to 93 critics score) not that that means anything, necessarily.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I haven't even heard of that one.zombie wrote:i guess anything is possible. haven't seen room, but she was great in short term 12 as i recall. though that needs a revisit.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I think Halle was great in Monster's Ball. Re: March 28th 2019
She was outshone by Jacob Tremblay in Room. She was good but he was the standout.
Re: March 28th 2019
looks like room is on netflix and short term 12 on amazon. maybe i'll give it a larson double feature on the weekend or something.

yeah, i haven't seen larson criticized much, before the captain marvel thing. but maybe i'm in the wrong circles.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Lawrence is still pretty critically lauded, but yeah her half-assness with Xmen is obvious and everyone knows it.zombie wrote:maybe it's a jennifer lawrence type of thing. then. being critically lauded in a lot of work, but also having the x-men stuff and passengers on her resume. i don't know.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I've seen Brie in both Skull Island and Captain Marvel now. Re: March 28th 2019
I'm also adding a new chapter in my first book. Different opening chapter, basically. After viewing one of my writing-tips channels on youtube, it brought up that my protagonist should be in the first chapter. Well, I split my chapters like episodes and each episode has a number of chapters in it. So my protagonist doesn't come into the picture until the 3rd chapter of the first episode. I originally didn't see it as a problem, but some of the beta readers (the ones that actually bothered to read) mentioned that they had a hard time focusing one which character is supposed to be the protagonist, so it was a rough start for them.
So I'm adding a chapter. I talk about what she's doing in Alaska during her opening section, as she doesn't live there and she's back in Washington, so I figure "let's actually write that shit out" and I have an opening thriller. Plotwise has nothing to do with the rest of the book, but not all James Bond intros were either.

You're contemplating a Larson double feature, we can check affirmative.zombie wrote:yeah, i haven't seen larson criticized much, before the captain marvel thing. but maybe i'm in the wrong circles.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Lawrence is still pretty critically lauded, but yeah her half-assness with Xmen is obvious and everyone knows it.zombie wrote:maybe it's a jennifer lawrence type of thing. then. being critically lauded in a lot of work, but also having the x-men stuff and passengers on her resume. i don't know.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I've seen Brie in both Skull Island and Captain Marvel now.
