Can someone explain why everyone is freaking out about the coronavirus? From what I've read, it's basically identical to a cold/flu, and only people with an already shitty respiratory system should be at any risk of anything more than the sniffles(which is the same for a cold/flu). Even the WHO site says as much. Is it just because shit's running rampant, or am I missing something?

The mortality rate is a little worse than the flu, the problem is China is being disingenuous about the total number of infected, as well as the fact that the amount of people currently sick are tallied into the mortality rate. If you're young and reasonably healthy, it shouldn't be too much of a worry. For me, though, my spleen was removed, so I have to be extra careful.

The 14-24 day incubation period that then let’s it spread faster is the biggest concern, as it’s more transmissible and therefore more likely to create a pandemic. We don’t have a vaccine so in effect if it spreads too far then everyone with respiratory or low immune systems could be at risk. Plus it has shown a variety of ways it affects people, and it can still affect a few not as likely to die so we aren’t clear on its impact on people. It’s also one of the worst Coronavirus outbreaks. You remember SARS and how panicky that got back then. SARS was a similar disease with its first contact among humans. SARS killed 700 and affected about 8000 people worldwide. That’s how well it was contained. COVID-19 has affected nearly 80,000 and killed 3,000 in China and dozens elsewhere. So as novel crises goes its worse than others and spreads further and faster than others.

That’s the main concern. Likely if it ca get contained then it won’t be an issue but if it didn’t then there are a few potentially grim scenarios. More than anything it’s notable for how poor a few govt responses have been compared to other countries.

In all seriousness, I live in Ohio. It will go from 70 degrees, down to 15 degrees....then up to 50 degrees in a few hours during the winter.
