Crap, we got a big virtual meeting at 8, and some people are already saying goodbye. Great sign.

That sucks man. My work just laid off quite a few drivers. They have been cutting hours on 1st shift for the production workers. On second shift, we are allowed to leave early if we want. I did last night an hour early. However, we are going to be next to be sent home. I can file unemployment, but I bet it is so far backed up right now.

The US government is going to have to do something on multiple fronts to prevent this from becoming apocalyptic.

Don’t know what you can do at this point except send checks to people every month until this is over
Not removing until John Elway is fired.

Hopefully this thing is shorter than unemployment benefits last and companies try and get everyone back.

I think people need to operate under the assumption that most of these jobs won’t exist anymore. Support for UBI + universal care will skyrocket in the near future. The world is going to be dramatically different very soon

I keep hearing this, but it seems like everyone forgets that the world has ADD when it comes to issues. Everyone gets up in arms about something, but then forgets within a month when something else comes along to get up in arms about. Sure, people will be talking about this shit until it is finally over with, but after that? Shit will go right back to normal, because people are idiots.

I mean no offense to anyone that believes this, though. Optimism is a great thing, but I am an eternal pessimist and see nothing but fuckery coming in the future.

It’s not an optimistic view at all. Tens of millions will be out of work with no prospects and the US government will have no clue what to do about it because all they know is making sure their overlords can afford their eighth yacht and telling everyone else to work more and work harder. Automation was already going to make this an inevitable problem, this is an accelerant that also widens the scope of the issue.

Ah, ok. Most people I hear this from are expecting some sort of world peace outcome from all of this, which is just mind-boggling to me.

Yeah that ain’t gonna happen. I see nothing but bad outcomes in the near future with very few means within our system to relieve them. Will that spur future reforms? Possibly, but that only ever comes through force of will. Taking to the streets and causing economic disruption. Otherwise lawmakers just benefit from the status quo, even this fucked up variant of it.

Also, that one-time check of $1200 ain’t shit in California. If you’re fucked, that just gives you a chance to make it to May.

If you’re living in a cow state, it’s going to be pretty helpful. Here it’s a joke.

I think the fact that this is reality in the coming 12-24 months means change will be coming. It’s not sustainable otherwise.

Yep. Wouldn't even cover rent in most places in my armpit of the woods.
