Kong and the Hobbit ones didn't really bomb, they just had such high budgets and marketing it was difficult to break even. Frighteners totally bombed though, and I believe that was Universal as well.
But I feel like the clue is more they just couldn't break into the mainstream because of their mainstream bombs. But now we're just overthinking things.
