Re: April 6th 2021
I noticed various horror films trending on twitter, so, against my better judgement, I checked to see what was going on. Apparently some journalist said horror can't be set in space. Anyone with two braincells could disprove that, so I'm assuming it was an attempt to get visibility. I guess the only thing you have to do to trend on twitter is say some dumb shit so people will eagerly prove you wrong. Gotta get those internet points somehow.
Re: April 6th 2021
i've heard arguments that science fiction elements can sap away at the horror. i disagree. but i hope there was some thought put into the hot take beyond just "i want eyes on my post!"
Re: April 6th 2021
i knew there had to be more to it! now we can discussYes. Horror is predicated on the fear of the other, the unfamiliar in the world as we know it – space, we already don't know it

It was completely for attention with no actual merit.zombie wrote:i've heard arguments that science fiction elements can sap away at the horror. i disagree. but i hope there was some thought put into the hot take beyond just "i want eyes on my post!"
Re: April 6th 2021
we've argued the starting point of the topic lots of times. "is alien a horror film?", so i prefer to see the merit, where the rest of you don't.

Re: April 6th 2021
That premise is only partially true. It is not the definition of horror as a whole, only one factor. You could discount tons of horror based on that definition. Any slasher film isn't horror by that definition. Hillbilly with a chainsaw? Not horror. Dude with a knife? Not horror. Any "based on a true story" film? Not horror. Jaws? Not horror, cause we are familiar with sharks. It's just dumb. By that definition, the only way a film can be horror is if there's some sort of supernatural element involved. This lady is just spouting nonsense to get a response, and no one gets more riled up about this shit than genre nerds(hence my response here). Horror is defined as "an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust." Took two seconds to google. No mention of one specific fear, just fear in general. End of argument.zombie wrote:i knew there had to be more to it! now we can discussYes. Who says Alien isn't horror? It's Aliens that causes the controversy.zombie wrote:we've argued the starting point of the topic lots of times. "is alien a horror film?", so i prefer to see the merit, where the rest of you don't.
Re: April 6th 2021
"unknown or other" does not mean, solely, supernatural or mythological/folkloric etc. horror, as any genre of art, is subjective. what qualifies as horror is subjective. or there would be no controversy about aliens or any other film. how she thinks of horror as a film genre is as valid as anyone else's point of view or categorization of some given films.Slaughterhouserock wrote:That premise is only partially true. Re: April 6th 2021
my own view of horror is a little bit nebulous, i guess. it's more about tone and atmosphere. than a given element or trope or setting. ghostbusters uses horror tropes and elements but is not horror, in itself, in my estimation.
Re: April 6th 2021
you can pick apart her stated point of view in various, even contradictory or opposite ways, depending on your own view. as indicated in that thread. so yay subjectivity and the eagerness to argue and pick fights, on twitter.

Re: April 6th 2021
Horror is subjective, the definition is not. Setting something in space does not automatically preclude it from being horror. Simplest example would be one of the "X in space" films(e.g. Jason X, Leprechaun 4, Hellraiser 4, etc.). They are exactly the same as all other non-space films in their franchise, just with a different backdrop. No one can say they are not horror films(well, Leprechaun 4 is a stretch, but you know what I mean). Pleasure demons from hell in a house, or an asylum, or a nightclub, or a space station, are still pleasure demons from hell. Jason in a camp, in Manhattan, or in space, is still Jason. It's an absolute shit over-generalization. It's like saying any underwater horror isn't horror because we don't know shit about the depths of the ocean.zombie wrote:"unknown or other" does not mean, solely, supernatural or mythological/folkloric etc. horror, as any genre of art, is subjective. what qualifies as horror is subjective. or there would be no controversy about aliens or any other film. how she thinks of horror as a film genre is as valid as anyone else's point of view or categorization of some given films.
If someone came up to me and asked me to describe Alien or Event Horizon, I would start by saying "it's a horror movie about...", I wouldn't even say sci-fi at any point. I'd say it's in space, but that's it. Space generally means sci-fi is involved, but it doesn't remove the other elements. I don't think anyone would describe Alien as "it's a sci-fi film that happens to have some monster in it, but it's really about the sci-fi elements. There's even an android! See, totally sci-fi." Utter nonsense. Nothing shows the fear of isolation better than being trapped on a fucking ship in space. Throw in a crazy android and a fucking acid-bleeding monster that's born from bursting out of your stomach and try to explain how it's not horror. Aliens is debatable only because it's more people with machine guns running around blowing shit up that happens to have aliens in it, rather than a handful of scientist types trapped with a monster.
Re: April 6th 2021
i feel like science fiction shouldn't really be a genre, honestly. it's the only one to be focused on tropes or setting, rather than on giving a specific feeling or experience to it's viewer.Slaughterhouserock wrote:Horror is subjective, the definition is not. also, i lean more toward your point of view on horror, than to hers. my issue is the telling her she's wrong or shooting down her point of view (as to those who aren't directly speaking or posting to her) out of hand. i prefer a discussion, rather than just stubborn disagreement and sniping. that's why people don't like politics. let's don't bring the same to horror movies.

Re: April 6th 2021
The setting should not denote the genre. Any normal person's view of horror is fine. We've all been debating horror shit for over a decade on various boards. Not once has someone said something so stupid as "it's in space, so it's not horror". It's disingenuous at best.zombie wrote:my own view of horror is a little bit nebulous, i guess. it's more about tone and atmosphere. than a given element or trope or setting. ghostbusters uses horror tropes and elements but is not horror, in itself, in my estimation.
I have no issues with people having opinions about what is or isn't horror. We've had them many times here. I still can't believe Jigsaw said that Scooby movie was horror, but at least his rationalization made fucking sense. This is just absurd. I didn't actually expect there to be a debate on this, so I'm just gonna stop here.zombie wrote:you can pick apart her stated point of view in various, even contradictory or opposite ways, depending on your own view. as indicated in that thread. so yay subjectivity and the eagerness to argue and pick fights, on twitter.

Agreed. It's rare to find a hard sci-fi film, and it's generally just a backdrop for events to take place.zombie wrote:i feel like science fiction shouldn't really be a genre, honestly. it's the only one to be focused on tropes or setting, rather than on giving a specific feeling or experience to it's viewer.

make your case, change her mind. that would be my approach. *shrug*Reign in Blood wrote:Until she starts spouting nothing but the #1 bullshit, which she did in abundance.zombie wrote:how she thinks of horror as a film genre is as valid as anyone else's point of view or categorization of some given films.

fair enough. i thought it could be an interesting discussion. there isn't enough horror talk around here. but we can move on.Slaughterhouserock wrote:The setting should not denote the genre. Re: April 6th 2021
I don't mind discussing horror, but I don't see this as a debate. As I said in my first post, to me, it's just someone stirring up shit to get views. Or, given the sudden emergence of flat-earthers and lizard people conspiracy theorists, maybe she's just that dumb, but my money's on the former.zombie wrote:fair enough. i thought it could be an interesting discussion. there isn't enough horror talk around here. but we can move on.

whether it was her doing, or the doing of everyone rushing to knock her down, stirring shit up is the curse of that platform, i guess.Slaughterhouserock wrote:I don't mind discussing horror, but I don't see this as a debate.
