I've been playing bass for twenty-seven years and have never counted. I've been watching some youtube videos on music theory and shit, and they all talk about counting like it's normal. Am I just a weird fucker in not doing so? I mean, you learn the song, you play it. Why the fuck you gotta count?
Not a cool musician by any means but if you learn a song from notes and you haven’t heard it then counting makes it a lot easier to keep it together. I counted when playing the trombone. Just made sense to do so.

I guess if you know the song you can just play it but in theory the speed you play had to match the count.

Yeah, I just always followed the drums. Drums are fast, I play fast, drums are slow, I play slow. If I'm playing by myself, I don't give a fuck how fast I'm going, I just play by ear.

I haven't played from sheet music since middle school. Even then, I just learned the song and played it. I hate playing to sheets. It's much easier to just learn the fucking song.

It is, I’m betting. For band it was essential to know the count at least. Doesn’t always make it cool though.

I don't count. I've always just played by ear and by feel. I rarely even use tablature. If I am playing in odd time, I can feel the upbeat and when it kind of shifts.
