Mayor's got a lot of pressure behind him. It's more evident in 2 (especially in a deleted scene) that he's not really the guy forcing the beaches to stay open, he's just the faceman.

Apparently in the book, he's got debts to the mob too, so he relied on the summer money. But that's not in the film. Just like Hooper boppin' Brody's wife

And they warn Brody by snapping his cat's neck right in front of Sean.

I like the book. As long as you know going in that the book won't measure up you'll probably enjoy it more.
