*looks at Flickchart*

Looks like it comes in 6th for horror of 2019 for me :P Doctor Sleep as at the top (it ranks 3rd for the year for me). It also counted The Lighthouse as Horror too (I can see it, in a psychological way), which came in 2nd.

The Turning (2020)

I wasn't gonna write a review, because I know most here weren't gonna see it unless it was a Challenge watch and really wasn't worth my time, but I just felt obliged to so because i'm bored.

This sucked. It's the same crap you've seen numerous times before, but they took the idea of Turn Of The Screw with the nanny and kids and added these random storylines and in the end it felt like they didn't know where they wanted to take the film. The Nanny/Kids subplot, this sexually frustrated ghost inside a 12 year old boy subplot. mental illness/dementia subplot. All the normal jump scares are littered throughout that it becomes fairly obvious when somethings about to happen and the ending. I think I have a general idea of the ending, but maybe i'm giving them too much credit for something this piss poor because my idea of the ending is quite a reach. It's one of those endings that's ambiguous, but it's also one of those endings that kind of insults it's audience. As mentioned, I think I have an idea of the ending they went with, but there's also like two other ideas that could also interpreted. Nonetheless, it's not a good movie. The story was simple and they managed to make it convoluted and pretty boring.

Parasite ........... A

Glad I finally got to see this. Near excellent, but the climax has me scratching my head a bit with the motive of the poor family's father doing what he does. It just seems so random to do something like that (SPOILERS: I guess constantly being reminded of his smell is *supposed* to drive him over, but I didn't buy it), that it took me out of the momentum for the rest of the movie. Replaced Joker for the 6th place of 2019 though :P

Zombieland Double Tap

I waited years for that. *sighs*
Only really cared for the white house/Metallica scene and the monster truck scene. Bummed.

I didn’t think it was the smell as such but rather the disdain he showed someone he on some perverse level had a great deal of empathy for in a strange way. Their conversation as he taped him to the pipe I think showed him something he felt a tragic connection with. Hence the difficulty. I do think the scene before that in the bushes with Mr Park adds to his sense of alienation.

Certainly put it in the A to A+ grade for me. Fantastic film.

Enough to provoke him to do what he does? Still seems flimsy to me.

I kind of saw it as a bit of a final straw moment leading on from losing everything anyway. His absolute heartbreak at the flooding in particular.

1917

Very very good visuals and direction.

I felt distracted by the artistry. Which is a shame.

Birds Of Prey wasn't all that great, sort of 'Meh' but the fight choreography towards the finale was pretty good, sadly nothing else really stood out for me and just ended up being a female version of Deadpool 2. Which I didn't like that much either. At least it was better than Suicide Squad.

Birds of Prey ........... B

Pretty good "filler" DC movie. Ewan is a fantastic villain, I liked the performances all around. The diamond plot was kinda eh, but at least everything else worked for me.

Yeah this movie took a wild turn not long after this and I loved it. Not my favorite of the year but since it looks like a two horse race for Best Picture, I'll be rooting for this one over 1917.

Friends take on 1917

I liked 1917 but it weirdly put me in mind of a video game called Splinter Cell...
“Press X to interact with the Frenchwoman civilian”
“Stick in the shadows in sneak mode to avoid the German sentries”
“Your companion got killed, time for a touching cutscene.”
“Final challenge run over the top and dodge the enemy shells. Press A to jump and X to roll.”

Not that I played either, but isn't Splinter Cell more of a future/modern game? Mendes has stated Call of Duty as an influence.

Think it was more in the play/style than the content.

Ah. Is the playstyle similar between the two games?

Yeah, between that gene and the film. Exactly.
