Sure they can denounce it after the fact, literally on the day it happened Trump calls the media st fault. It’s so obviously one sided here in terms of the cause of the issue. Bad actors on both sides is all well and good but only one side is encouraging those bad actors!

we can give cover and play politics all we want. there is division and incitement from both sides. name a respected public figure that is trying to mend it at all? name someone who is working toward seeing the political opposition as worth more than dirt?

wear a charlie manson t-shirt and it's cool. it's counter-culture. wear a maga hat and get your ass kicked. that kind of indicates a problem to me.
Both sides? Still not the case. One side. It’s visibly one side doing things very differently to another side.
i'll wear a maga hat and post pictures with a black eye and you still would deflect. i don't see the point of this discussion.

the bombing was bad and it a a conservative nut, apparently. trump and others have denounced that shit. they are not supporting the attempted bomber.
Can't say it better than this^

You’re both just playing ignorant at this point if you don’t see a difference in the rhetoric on the right and the fear and lies compared to the left. Obama isn’t on the trail saying Fox News is the enemy of the people or getting chants of Lock shim Up and certainly never praised those who physically harm reporters. All of these are Trump 101 in the past week. That, lying about refugees and asylum seekers, and making up a pretend tax cut. The mere concept of norms on the right is laughable at this point.

We both dislike Trump but are not so tribal as to see what's actually going on.

Would also like to point out that if you think political rhetoric is to blame, be prepared to defend art, music, movies, and video games as influencers of violence.

In 1975 Gerald Ford survived two close range assassination attempts with guns just 17 days apart. Both batshit crazy women who did not know each other.

I have to disagree though in theory what you say is true. It's the constant Hatfield McCoy thing we have here where both sides do believe the other is at fault that encourages violence. If people treated other people with respect instead of demonizing them alot but not all of this could be avoided.

and jeff zucker blamed trump for the attacks, the day it happened. as is the start point of this thread.

do we have any good actors? can you name a public figure who supports trump that would be treated civilly by cnn? if so, maybe there is hope to find.

I am not sure any of the assassination attempts (or very few) would be avoided. Culture at large certainly comes into play how regular people interact, but the crazies are always gonna be there.

I don't blame society for the criminal actions of an individual, but rather how we behave at large. It really is quite striking to look at the most popular songs, movies, video games, and TV shows from each year and see just how much more aggression and violence permeates our culture.

we already do have to defend art, music, movies. etc. :P

but it's not the same. musicians and actors / filmmakers are not running countries. or at least not while they're making movies. :P

And as you defend art you should defend other speech. No qualms here.

interested why you think that is? is it like being desensitized more and more to fictional violence, so need it to be bigger or gmore extreme or whatever. kind of like a junkie using bigger and bigger doses to get that feeling?

Probably. It is like we went from pop culture being Sonny and Cher singing to each other and Lionel Richie singing about love to talking about killing cops and fingering pussy in front of the audience in no time. Pac-man and donkey kong became ripping people's spines out or blowing their brains out close up through a sniper rifle.

Same thing with sex. I realized I had an unhealthy relationship with porn that was damaging my ability to have real intimacy.

Desensitization is real. Just ask doctors who see things daily that might make a regular person puke.

if you feel desensitized, is it possible that you don't watch (or listen to) enough lighter stuff, less serious stuff, to balance it out?

do you think that desensitization to fictional violence is the same as desensitization to actual violence? i don't. i've seen tons of murder onscreen, but if i saw it in front of me, it would pretty certainly be a very different reaction.

I think I actually do listen and watch a lot of variety.

Why do you think things of the past that were shocking and titilating are considered boring and tame by modern audiences?

do you feel desensitized though? is it worth figuring out if there is a way to undo that?

i think that a large part of it is viewing them with bias because they're "old". it could also be for how they're filmed, the pace, the themes. where do you think the cut off point is? because there are a lot of tamer movies today, than in the 70s and 80s. so i'm not sure it's about the violence or gore.

Of course. I can watch things that would make an Amish person puke.

What would be the 1960's mainstream equivalent of the Saw movies? How about the 70's? Sure, stuff existed, but way outside of the mainstream.
