Someone come up with a title for all of us, I don't want the entire site traipsing around as Admins (scare off the 1 visitor we get). We'll be the real deal with all equal rights.
Overlords
I didn't even like being a mod. I mix up the buttons. That's just me though.
This week at work I had two hands in a guys mouth and managed to get my top knot/bun stuck on the light. I mean stuck stuck. As in I turn my head to the right and the light goes with me. I just kept thinking maybe he doesn't notice. Nope. I started to hear (and feel) breath coming out of his mouth. Yup. He noticed. He was laughing. Still finished my work though.

Reign in Blood wrote:What do you guys think would be a kick ass blu ray to watch in the theater for surround sound? We're doing a thing for work, and the shortlist they gave me was Mad Max: Fury Road, Twister and Wall-E. I was gonna pick Twister (Pax, respect), but then they said we had to bring the blu-ray, in which I got Mad Max. BUT, if I got to bring the god damn thing, and it can be anything, I don't want to watch Fury Road (sorry D), I think I want Big Trouble in Little China, or summat. Thoughts?
Big Trouble!
They even make sound when they jump or go in the air!

I like that.
Other options to play around with:
Slashers
Specters (alternatives: Shades, Phantasms)
Mogwai (wise and noble creatures, obviously, though any that have kids can then refer to said kids as gremlins if they don't already.)
Morningstars
Priests
Survivors
The Initiated
Cravens
Stalkers
Brotherhood
Revenants
Wraiths

PS- I miss coming around and bullshitting with everyone. I've been working with my therapist on getting over my hangups about showing people my writing and actually reaching out to attempt to find some beta readers for my better pieces.
I've been a bit consumed by my own brain lately. Hope all of you are well.

Cool. My only issue with beta readers now is having them finish in a timely manner. Some have had my first book for over a year now
Which in the mean time I've written two more.

You are missed!
I always liked reading your work stories and what you made the littles in your family.
Is the Beta thing anonymous (as in they don't know who you are) or is it online readers that you know who they are and they know who you are? (good gosh that sounds confusing)

It could be anonymous I suppose. They can be strangers, friends (but make sure if they are friends or even family that they are discerning and won't be like a mom and constantly go "that's so good honey!").
One thing I found some beta readers don't understand is that THEY ARE NOT EDITORS.

i thought of another one that should have been obvious, we could call you guys The Old Ones or give you each an Eldritch God/Monster name or other Godly pantheon names.

I'm aiming for anonymous just because I'm really uncomfortable with strangers knowing my real name. I will likely set up a specific set of accounts for my pen name and do all interactions with anything writing related from that account. I'm already super uncomfortable that I put my real name to a poem I wrote.

I’d find it hard to be mean to you guys about your writing. Although I’d be a shit beta reader.

My issue has been settling on a version to send them. I want it to be my idea of perfect before I send it, but I'm never going to make it perfect and I know it so I need to make an edit and commit to that edit going out for review.
I'm not really

Yeah, that's why I haven't offered to read friends' stuff or send my stuff to friends. I don't trust them to be brutally honest with me and I need that to get better. I also don't trust myself to be brutally honest with them because what experience do I have to go on to tell them I think something doesn't work?
One of the main things Mark has pointed out to me in my writing is that he thinks I'm expecting too much from my readers in a few of my stories. I don't connect things up for them in a neat little package, I just put the elements in there and hope they can figure out the connections on their own. The connections aren't really necessary to the story overall, they just add a little depth to the story if you do figure them out.

There's a difference between being mean and being critical. Being mean doesn't help. Telling us you fell asleep reading X part because it just dragged on helps. Letting us know that our character was being a whiny unrelatable jerk for no reason in this one part helps. Sometimes we mean for them to be whiny and unrelatable or we intentionally make a slow part to world build a little, sometimes it's an oversight and having it pointed out can help us refine things we might've been overlooking. The why's of things that don't work are way more important than just laying out the specific scenes that don't work. For example, if someone told me they didn't like this particular scene because they are uncomfortable reading about a gay relationship or reading about an atheist doing good in the world, I'm not gonna do shit to change it. If they tell me that my gay character is coming off as just a blank stereotype without any real depth as a person or character, or my atheist is acting high and mighty while presenting themselves as altruistic through the narrative (unless I intend for them to be an unreliable narrator) then I have problems I need to figure out how to correct.

Suppose real valid criticism can be helpful. At least, as you say, might show what you were trying to demonstrate. Do you have to pay anonymous beta readers? Or are they just nice people with free time?
