Is the hourly thing not gonna allow pay regardless of hours given the pandemic?

Not sure what the question is, unless the term hourly is weird or summat? It's not just an American thing, there's tons of jobs that only pay you when you show up, for that time, and if there's no work, you're not gonna be told to show up.

I mean won’t the company pay the hours you WOULD have worked if not for the pandemic to avoid losing you and to get compensated by the state for doing so?

In general, no. There's no grand insurance policy. You'll have some companies that are cooler than others, better prepared, value people or things during this over others. And the government will give stimulus and relief here and there, but it's largely a bottom line game.

Basically this.

But supposedly we can. I'm sure there's enough of a spaghetti mess to make it difficult to apply that will continue to hurt the general public. The small business owners have to fill it out, so it's up in the air right now for us if the owner can get it through or not.

Just used up the last of my vacation time I saved up to help out today.

Depends on the company. My Pop's has had it slow at work. A lot of guys got laid off but he was one of the guys they kept. If he doesn't get 40 hours due to slow work, the company pays him 15 dollars an hour for the amount of hours he needed to get to 40.

Surely that’s millions if not tens of millions of people underemployed or unemployed in the coming months? That’s not sustainable for any civilized nation! What is the $2tn going to if not to help ensure businesses don’t lay off staff and cause more financial downturn? And surely loads of you get insurance through companies, so this adds uninsured people to a Pandemic. 200,000 dead seems low in that outcome.

Had the worst news today about a friend. His father died of COVID-19. Seems it was agonizing suffering for the final three days or so. Heartbreaking. Really heartbreaking.

Tried to console him as it just happened today but it’s so hard. I remember how awful it was for me but the quarantine/social distancing obviously adds to the challenge.

Hate hearing this. I hope he had a long and fruitful life. Nothing can be said to ease the pain of those who lost their loved ones. I still think of you and your Mom sometimes, Seb...
