D, you care to explain these Oscar noms to me? I tried to watch Sound of Metal, but it wasn't doing it for me and I bounced (and I partially thought it was foreign flick to boot), and I guess I have to watch Mank out of obligation, but I'm not excited about it. This the fucking BAFTA awards or some shit? It's all so alien.

Didn't see Sound of Metal. It's mostly because of how the indie releases were able to get more award attention thanks to Covid crippling the movie theaters.

Mank is pretty damn good...I think I have it ranked at my top spot for 2020, but I don't have a very large list. My weakest movie-watching year probably since I was a teenager. Also, it would feel kinda weak if this is what finally gets Fincher a Directing Oscar. Not like The Departed for Martin, which was fucking great, it would be more like Scent of a Woman for Al, where yeah it's good, but the award for that particular piece would seem like a pat on the head. Pretty sure the gal who directed Nomadland is probably gonna snag it from him though, she seems like she's on a roll. I'll be watching Nomadland soon.

I was kind of annoyed Regina King didn't get a directing nomination for One Night In Miami though. I thought she did a terrific, tense, mostly one-set piece, but I guess because they felt they hit a quota with already nominating two women (the one who didn't direct Nomadland is the one that baffles me because I don't really hear anything about that movie, other than her getting nominated repeatedly.)

Disappointed no acting nomination for Delroy Lindo for Da Five Bloods. But Steve Yuen did make history as the first asian american nominated for Best Actor, so that's cool. Never even heard of his movie until now.

Chadwick's gonna take Best Actor...even though no one would give a rat's ass about the movie if he weren't dead. But I get it. He worked his ass off doing solid work for several years while suffering from cancer, so I guess that should be acknowledged in some way. And it's not at all like Heath back in 2008, where he actually had Oscar buzz for his Joker performance before his death. It's a shame because before Chadwick's death, it seemed like Anthony Hopkins was torpedoing the Best Actor race, and I'd liked to have seen Hopkins snag another one before he goes.

I don't have much to say other than I haven't seen most of what's nominated, because most of it seemed like made-for-tv movies. Harsh to say, but very little of what's nominated has that grand filmmaking scope.
