Oh God, I think I have to watch The Grudge (2004) today.

Here's a mildly funny story, at least to me.

As many of you may know, I keep a list of every single movie I've watched that I consider horror, and have for years. I have both Ju-on (2002) and The Grudge (2004) listed, but I know for a fact I've only seen one of them. I added it months after I watched it, so I couldn't remember which of the two I watched, and to this day, I have no idea.

Which is to say that technically, The Grudge could be a first-time watch, but I have absolutely no idea, and so will be counting it as a rewatch.

That said, I'll probably watch something more fun first.

Never seen a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, nor have I seen the movie. Sorry fam.

I am in DuVall's fan-club. 2001's How to Make a Monster is required watching in my household (which is probably why I have no friends ).

That said, we're talking about a movie that, if I even saw it, I would have seen at least eight years ago, so I've long admitted to myself that I'll never know which of the two I've actually seen.

When it comes to Asian horror, I have a very difficult time telling characters apart, so whenever there's two or three friends who look moderately similar, and one dies, I often lose track. I've started trying to track the clothes and names closely, but it doesn't always help.

When the plot's already complicated - as I very much remember either Ju-on or The Grudge being - it doesn't help anyway. I wouldn't mind watching more Asian horror, but I did watch One Missed Call a year or two ago, and I just didn't see anything special about it, so it may be possible it's just not my vibe.

That said, 2002's Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water) gets a high rating from me, and Battle Royale gets a 10/10, so I'm not completely blinded to their charm.

If you have Asian horror suggestions, I'll certainly take them. Giallo is of infinite more interest to me, though, as are krimis.

Watched A Tale of Two Sisters once. Had absolutely no idea what was going on, but I was also probably only 12 or 13, so I'm due for a rewatch. Also seen The Eye - apparently gave it a 7/10 on IMDb - but can't say I remember much.

Never seen Onibaba. I did decide to watch a classic Japanese movie this month - Jigoku - and it ended up being among my least-favorite watches of the month (ties with movies like Possession and Normal Violence).

Also never seen Versus, but that's another movie I've known about for years and years, so that might be worth watching at some point.

Krimis are a sub-genre of German Crime movies that pre-date gialli by about four, five years or so. Somewhat similar in ideas, though far less krimis tend to be horror than gialli.

I've only seen a few - 1963's The Strangler of Blackmoor Castle (Der Würger von Schloß Blackmoor) was stellar - but some of them look quite interesting. It's not something I've had a chance to delve into too deeply as of yet.

I'm not saying it feels like Possession - I'm saying I disliked it about as much. Vibes are entirely different, I think.
