The point of the show is to put yourself in Walt's shoes. It is understandable and gradually becomes less so throughout the show.
i don't think that is the point of the show. i don't think vince gilligan meant for us to sympathize with or root for walt, really.
People are naturally gonna empathize with a protagonist but his series of choices becoming increasingly immoral is a challenge to the viewer

Maybe not, but remember. This was right after the likes of Tony Soprano, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Cartman etc. all becoming beloved and dominating their respective shows, all far from envisioned. Walt actually looks pretty fucking good in comparison, so Gilligan couldn't be oblivious.

i don't think he is that kind of a character. i think he's meant to be a tragic figure who got in over his head from the start and continued falling harder and harder. i don't view the show the way you seem to.

Rumors just began circulating that Olivia Hussey may have passed. Can't find anything confirming though. Hopefully just a rumor.

because they're interesting or fun to watch, not because you empathize with them, right? i don't know... maybe i'm the one watching it wrong. *shrug*

I see it as an agreeable guy who went with the flow in his life and the cancer diagnosis awakened his ego and the series of events that occurred throughout his life, past and present, caused him to address his life through his own ego and caused a drastic change. An over qualified genius who settled for a life as a high school teacher who by the end wouldn't settle for anything less than the absolute king of the drug empire.

We are after all one small change away from something dramatically effecting the rest of our lives.

True. Truth is, Jason is the only one that thinks if you get cancer, becoming a ruthless murdering drug lord is the only possible answer to help your family. I don't know, bruv. :P

flawed tragic characters who fall all the way apart can be interesting to watch vicariously. other characters make awful decisions but you're still meant to root for them or empathize with them overall. i don't get that from him. that's all.

At least for The Sopranos and Mad Men, the formula was always:

1. Present the protagonist as an obviously shitty person
2. Have them do enough good or at least normal human things to build audience empathy
3. When you as a viewer start feeling removed from the reality of their awfulness, pull the trap door and remind you how terrible they are

Breaking Bad is different because it’s pretty much just a straight descent into hell. That’s why I find Tony Soprano and Don Draper more compelling, there was always a back and forth and at least a feeling that they could find some redemption.
Not removing until John Elway is fired.

I love how the correlation of Walt being a brilliant chemist and turning into a completely different character by the end coincides with his personal definition of chemistry: the study of change.
