Yes. The Lakers had a pretty obvious incentive to not want the deal to leak or they risked other teams trying to beat their offer. And what is the upside of asking LeBron? If he says no and you do it anyway, then you piss him off.

It doesn't make any sense from any standpoint to trade Luka for anything. Zero sense. I can't find any reason to believe it was just a dumb trade that happened to involve the most marketable franchise banking off of it.

Luka isn’t anywhere near the draw LeBron is.
LeBron is 40 and out the door very soon. All of a sudden the Lakers have their franchise guy for the next 15 years. You don't think ratings are gonna go up after this? You said yourself, the Lakers always get the guy and the guy just miraculously fell right into their lap. You fully attribute it to stupidity without giving it a second thought. Could be stupidity. But I'm banking on a ratings push. Nico Harrison was a deer in the headlights in that press conference and that's not how people behave who supposedly orchestrated the whole thing.
