Police: "We only kill black people"

Pretty fucking retarded thing to be saying regardless of intent.

Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
it's within their right to fire him or whatever, but i don't think it warrants that.
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
I believe a firing is fully warrented
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
Have we gone so tone deaf that we cannot hear the way he is saying that? Injecting a moment of levity into a situation where a person is scared, and directly references propaganda that made her that way. His tone is sensitive and caring.
Firing people who show themselves to be human may not be the best approach. If the officer has other incidents or has generally shown other signs of concern, fine. This video alone is nothing that should require any more than a sit down to talk about what you should not say.

Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
yeah, he was trying to ease her fear a little bit. it was a dumb joke, at worst.
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
The statement no matter the intent was incredibly distasteful and showed horrible judgement. Law enforcement should be held to a higher standard.
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
law enforcement should be held to a high standard, as far as not letting their power go to their head, or letting situations get the better of them, when it's not warranted. but they are still people. he made a dumb joke. it was in poor taste. tell him not to do it again.
but again, if they want to overreact to this, that's their right.

Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
I am a big believer that we should judge people in their totality, not a small youtube style clip of what may be their worst moment.
If this officer took the time to become a police officer, was a good cop, and this was his worst moment, give him an award. If he is regarded as a borderline cop who is always crossing lies and such, fire him.
Society has fallen into a terrible habit of judging people through tiny out of context clips, snippets, and articles.

Imagine the worst thing you have ever done is captured for all eternity and displayed publicly. 40 years of kindness is erased because of 40 seconds of video. All the good was not recorded.
Imagine the time when you were doing something good, but a portion that looked bad was caught out of context. You have little to no voice to explain.

You are the face, you live with your portrayal good or bad. To me, it was a terribly bad thing to say. And there are consequences.
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
In the OP, you use "retarded" as a pejorative. Do you know how many people get deeply offended by that term, especially used in that way? Or the term "Cunt"?showa58taro wrote:You are the face, you live with your portrayal good or bad. To me, it was a terribly bad thing to say. And there are consequences.
Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
Perhaps I am a sociopath, because if I was a cop and wanted to do real damage, I would simply work within the law to do so and not be caught on camera. When on camera or placed in different situations, be the perfect cop. the guy in the video may be a bad cop, or he may be a good cop who simply interacts like a human being and had no cause for concern about his regular behavior.
I saw a guy trying to diffuse someone's fear, not a guy trying to instill it. Would you rather deal with him or a "by the book" prick? The woman was drunk and scared. His joke seemed to work.

Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
this wasn't out of context, unless there is more to the specific video. it shouldn't have to be defended by saying that you're not taking his whole life into account. that seems like you think he did something really wrong, but wanna deflect from that. i don't think he did anything worth being fired over, personally. that's all you need to say, if you feel the same way.Foo wrote:Imagine the worst thing you have ever done is captured for all eternity and displayed publicly. 40 years of kindness is erased because of 40 seconds of video. Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
Of course it is out of context because you are not privy to the entire event. Did you hear the conversation up to that point? Did you see the outcome? Did you see what was going on inside the car?zombie wrote:this wasn't out of context, unless there is more to the specific video. it shouldn't have to be defended by saying that you're not taking his whole life into account. that seems like you think he did something really wrong, but wanna deflect from that. i don't think he did anything worth being fired over, personally. that's all you need to say, if you feel the same way.Foo wrote:Imagine the worst thing you have ever done is captured for all eternity and displayed publicly. 40 years of kindness is erased because of 40 seconds of video. Context ALWAYS matters.

that's not what you were arguing, seemingly. but fair enough.Foo wrote:Of course it is out of context because you are not privy to the entire event. Did you hear the conversation up to that point? Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
Look at it this way, would you feel differently about what he said if you found out he was ALWAYS saying racial bullshit during every traffic stop, versus this isolated incident?
Would you feel differently if you observed the situation and discovered he was essentially providing a false dialogue that did not fit the reality of the situation?

Re: Police: "We only kill black people"
I agree with foo and zombs in one sentence shouldnt define you but as a police officer in the act of doing his job he had to use better judgement maybe costing his career would be extreme but words have consequences and you just have to know better.
