Had a conversation with a friend today who knows little-to-nothing about Jean Claude Van Damme. Not sure he's seen one movie with JCVD.
Regarding action stars, his favorites are Tom Cruise and Jason Statham. I told him Arnie was probably my fav as far as pure action is concerned. He then mentioned that Cruise is better because he does his own stunts, and Statham is definitely better because he is trained in multiple martial arts! I promised him with every fiber of my being that Jean Claude NOW would beat the ever-loving holy fuck out of Jason Statham in his prime and he refused to believe it. I tried explaining to him a couple of years back the same dealy with Arnold vs. JCVD. Arnie is the better action star overall with the better filmography, but JCVD could kill him at will.

What is the HMF consensus? JCVD vs. Jason Statham...

van damme and statham in a fight? i think i'd side with statham, as he's younger and probably more in his prime. but i could be convinced otherwise. as action stars go, van damme is far better. and i can't be convinced otherwise.

The commitment JCVD had to bodybuilding and obviously martial arts is damn impressive. Never seen anyone else with his musculature do splits and kicks like that.

JCVD. He has an extreme amount of years of martial arts training versus Statham who apparently only started martial arts training around The Transporter (before then, his only real athletic credit was diving. Diving. Let that sink in...), and only seemed to train enough just to pull things off onscreen. JCVD sure did ballet, but that was on the side of already training Shotokan at the age of 10 (not sure when he started adding Kickboxing in the mix, but I feel safe assuming it was young too), earned black belt ranks, added Muay Thai and Taekwondo into his mix, would kick ass in actual full contact tournaments (18 wins, all knockouts, 1 defeat). I really don't think Statham has a chance. You're friend is a moron.
