At the time, it seemed 90% of fans were losing their minds. The other 10% recognized it was structured as a year by year contract to benefit the team's flexibility.Foo wrote:See: Colin Kaep's "record $61 million guarantee"

Re: NFL Offseason, 2017
I'm gonna look into this just for the Broncos, but my gut instinct is that there have been very few players who actually played out lengthy second contracts for the Broncos. Shit, DeMarcus Ware even had to take a pay cut to play out his third year.Foo wrote:I would LOVE to see a study on what percentage of players see the final year of their first non-rookie contract.

Re: NFL Offseason, 2017
Outside of elite starting QBs I am guessing it is very rare. Obviously they are usually negotiating raises at that point, but I would say it is less than 5% for the rest of the league.Headhunter wrote:I'm gonna look into this just for the Broncos, but my gut instinct is that there have been very few players who actually played out lengthy second contracts for the Broncos. I would count Champ as one. He probably re-signed before hitting that final year on his second deal, but it was effectively for more, not less I would imagine. In other words, it was his choice to not play it out, not the team renegotiating him down or cutting him.

Re: NFL Offseason, 2017
Statistically I'm sure the hit rate for playing out contracts is higher now just because teams stopped loading the contracts with so much window dressing. Six year contracts are the max you see anymore, I remember 7-10 year deals being pretty normal for a while. I doubt anybody ever played out one of those.Foo wrote:Outside of elite starting QBs I am guessing it is very rare. Shit, I think Champ actually played out his deal. Seven years no less, he was a true free agent in 2011 when he was re-signed.Foo wrote:I would count Champ as one. 7 years, 63 million for a corner was pretty incredible for 2004, enough so that it was still a great deal for Champ by 2010.

Looking for Nalen's contract info. This stuff is a lot tougher to find than it should be.Foo wrote:Well, there we go. LOL. Nalen got his second contract in 1999.
Restructured the very next offseason and again in 2001. Unreal. Never fails.

Tony Jones got a seven year deal in 2000.
That was his last season in the NFL . . .

Great teammate, good leadership. They'll be a liability this year, but hopefully Bolles is a stud in the future and we'll find a real RT at some point.Jason wrote:Von praising Bolles and Menelik Watson. Hope he's correct.

Ray Lewis should stick to murder. That guy is insufferable.

If I'm a murderer and need to dispose of a blood-soaked suit, Ray is the first guy I'm calling. For any other reason, last guy I'm calling. He fashions himself as this father figure to young players and doesn't see how corny and fake his persona comes across as. He should be ignored altogether.
