You have to ignore the tight proximity to the goal where everything happened. Had he fumbled on the 5, and then the ball went over the goal line and out through the side of the end zone five yards deep, and then walked over and picks it up out of bounds, the issue is clear.

If you want to say the real problem is technology creating weird judgment calls about possession and such necessary, I agree. I could even agree that fumbling out of the end zone is too punitive.

Bullshit call. If he was bobbling it as/after he hit the ground, fine fuck it, but he regained possession in the blink of an eye. That's got to count as much as hitting it to bobble in the blink of an eye and thus call goes to runner.
