If you're walking into the dispensary, you're either there to buy the shit or there for shits and giggles. No need to be so dramatic.zombie wrote:i've never been in a dispensary, but if it has the feel of a candy store... i have to object to that. it's a drug. it should look like a pharmacy or something. it shouldn't be made to be more attractive to those that are on the fence. it shouldn't be made out to be something enticing. there should be some kind of regulation about how it can be sold and how the buildings can appear. and that's even just pot. i definitely don't want to see that go for heavier shit.

so then, there's no need to dress it up like a candy shop? i'm just going by how reign described it to be.Headhunter wrote:If you're walking into the dispensary, you're either there to buy the shit or there for shits and giggles. There's no need for them to do anything, the product sells itself. Don't personally see a problem with making it a fun atmosphere though. Remember it is being sold as a recreational product now, not just as medicine.zombie wrote:so then, there's no need to dress it up like a candy shop? i'm just going by how reign described it to be.Headhunter wrote:If you're walking into the dispensary, you're either there to buy the shit or there for shits and giggles. And yes, the atmosphere of the shops were the same before legalization. And no, I didn't really take issue with that either. There's more of a case to be made there, I suppose.

that's true. it's recreational too. liquor stores are made to be enticing. they're gonna do what they wanna do. i don't have to like it.Headhunter wrote:There's no need for them to do anything, the product sells itself. People need to have the sense to understand the risks of certain behaviors and weigh the costs and benefits for themselves. If we're going to weigh the small group of people who will be more likely to experiment because it's legal, we should also weigh the small group of thrill-seekers and daredevils who would be less apt to because it isn't illegal. How many young people grow out smoking weed and drinking as hobbies when it just becomes a normalized part of being an adult? A lot of things are more appealing to people because of the risks and social stigmas.Reign in Blood wrote:The legalize hard drugs convo in here is non-sense. I'm with Headward in that a plenty if not a majority that want to do that shit would anyways. But since they legalized weed in Cali, the couple of stores I've been to make that shit like you're walking into a movie theater concession stands, bright LED screens with all the options, the stuff under glass stands to view, nice presentation etc. It's like buying candy and popcorn and shiz, for fuck sakes. You want that same type of shit for heroin, meth, speed, ecstasy etc. and the 21 year old kid not sharp behind the ears who maybe wouldn't touch the shit for fear of repercussions/prosecution/becoming a prison bitch and not wanting to deal with seedy drug dealers, ain't gonna say fuck it, try it and do the downward spiral? Bullshit. Addicts gonna addict. But plenty don't do stupid shit for fear of the law and repercussions.

That's not even accounting for probably a larger group of pretty terrible people who do drugs because we've created an environment where drugs and other criminal behavior go hand-in-hand. Personally, I think you can do a whole lot of good by separating the two. I'm comfortable seeing where the chips fall, I'd bet on a net win for society even with some new costs factored in.

I doubt anyone would be much surprised, but I find myself agreeing with almost everything Head has said in this thread.

I fall more into the Reign school of thought here I fear. The heavy stuff has the “try it and get fucked” feel in my mind that invalidates it’s status as an acceptable behavior. But that is a departure from my hero JS Mill who would agree with it as long as the harm is to oneself only and not others. That’s where I always get torn a bit, being as I do t like harm to others even by themselves, creating an odd logical imperative.
Re: Asian small business owner is arrested...
we make it taboo and alluring at the same time. you're wrong if you do it at all, but also artists and musicians are cool for doing it. and then, we encourage legal drugs (like alcohol and tobacco) to be abused as the norm. you get shitfaced. you smoke half a pack a day. so illegal drugs are taken in a similar way. we don't encourage small doses. we don't encourage responsible usage. (if there is such a thing)
also shooting into a vein should never have been shown to be the way to do heroin...

Re: Asian small business owner is arrested...
I do t think heroin is a small doses kinda drug.
Re: Asian small business owner is arrested...
it was made to be more potent than it's natural counterparts (opium and morphine), so maybe it's not a "small dose kind of drug". maybe the desired effect requires being shitfaced, so to speak. i don't know how much of that is just the culture built up around it, and the actual effects of the drug.
injection still is not the only option. it is probably the fastest to get into your system though.

The damage rarely stops at themselves though. The reckless and selfish people of those addicted wrecks whole communities.showa58taro wrote:I fall more into the Reign school of thought here I fear. Unemployable addicts having babies that society ends up trying to care for. They steal and rob to get more and more. It is awful.

Out of curiosity, do you think we have prescription laws on drugs as some sort of conspiracy or something?zombie wrote:it was made to be more potent than it's natural counterparts (opium and morphine), so maybe it's not a "small dose kind of drug". maybe the desired effect requires being shitfaced, so to speak. i don't know how much of that is just the culture built up around it, and the actual effects of the drug.

what? i don't understand what you're trying to get at... i am not opposed at all to separating prescription drugs from more available type of drugs.Foo wrote:Out of curiosity, do you think we have prescription laws on drugs as some sort of conspiracy or something?zombie wrote:it was made to be more potent than it's natural counterparts (opium and morphine), so maybe it's not a "small dose kind of drug". maybe the desired effect requires being shitfaced, so to speak. i don't know how much of that is just the culture built up around it, and the actual effects of the drug.
