My genuine surprise has been how many people think parents like that are rare. Even in the past few years there's been quite a few cases of the parents of a kid being the kid's rapist (or assisting the rapist) and/or murderer. These parents were pretty inept, and basically had their hands tied due to the religion they followed (and the dad was clearly a closet case). And it was painfully clear that the mom was still in love with the guy even after everything he'd done to her daughter and was even a little jealous/resentful of the daughter over it.

People keep saying, "Oh my god, I can't believe this is a true story, it's insane!" and my reaction is pretty much, "Yeah, totally what I expected, religious mind-controlled people that let their image as the 'perfect godly family' supersede the wellbeing of their children and refused to see reason because it went against everything they've been taught to believe."

I get the whole "Aliens? WTF?" aspect, but the idea behind the things she said he told her are pretty on par with things a pedophile says to groom kids (just...with the addition of aliens always watching. In a lot of cases "God" is used instead, so not that out there.)

The aliens part was definitely my biggest WTF moment. But this guy managing to have sex with both parents as part of his manipulating was pretty shocking too. I feel bad for them, I'm not going to mock them.
