Ah, this was intended to be a 4 part miniseries for Italian TV, with a kill at the end of each episode. Then the TV execs rejected it cause it was too gruesome so they just made it a movie. That explains the drawn out time between kills.

I wish he had the chance to do more films, but in a way I guess it's better to have a handful of really solid films instead of churning out garbage like Argento and Bava did in their later years.
