If you can’t separate the character from being either white or a minority, like it’s actually fundamental to the character itself, it obviously makes less sense to change that. I think what I’m talking about is pretty obvious
Right. That works. But we can't pretend this is only what Hollywood wants to do.
I’ll buy that if you have examples.
Let's remake Little Mermaid!
Let's also make her black for no reason.
Let's create a new Scooby Doo cartoon where Velma is the lead!
Let's also make her black for no reason.
Off the top of my head.
Are mermaids only white?
Until recently, yes!

Not all peeps in the hood are black. Let's remake Friday with Andrew Garfield and Tom Hardy imo

Reservoir Dogs was remade as a stage play with all black actors. That would be one case where the race stuff is not really fundamental to the characters without dramatically changing everything. No reason to believe there couldn’t be an all-black criminal operation like that. So that would be one scenario where I have no problem with it.
Agreed. Now remake Beverly Hills Cop with a white guy.
Fuck it, we might actually get a good one this time.
That would be a good example of fundamentally changing the premise of the whole thing
It was the first diversity hire you sonsabitches, it was written for Stallone and then stolen by blacky!

I don’t think it’s difficult to differentiate between characters being the race they are because that’s just how it was cast vs the race actually being part of the story. You just want to be mad about black people for some reason.

Reign and Zombie get what I’m talking about and Jason never will. That is good enough for me.

I'd be the first on the boycott train if they remade Friday with white dudes. So maybe you're not getting it?

No, it’s definitely a you problem here. Your examples are really bad and not at all relevant to what I’m talking about.

Also, a comedy with two white boys living in the hood could be funny. It wouldn’t be Friday though.

I fully understand your point. If they remake The Conqueror, get a Mongol to play Genghis Khan. Makes perfect sense. But you won't meet in the middle and admit Hollywood is a little overboard with the diversity shit

Examples to illustrate my point where recasting certain white roles as minorities doesn’t make sense:
Mad Men
The French Connection
American History X
To Kill a Mockingbird
Dances with Wolves
Grab Torino
Lawrence of Arabia
Mississippi Burning

hollywood goes overboard sometimes. but not for a lack of white roles.

You can't remake stuff like Friday, Boys in tha Hood or Menace 2 Society with whites, they are fundamentally about black interactions and experiences in those roles and times. Sure there have been some whites in that environment, but nobodies buying the movie. Its like casting an all black Dead Poets Society. In 1959, a prestigious boarding school of all black students learning poetry?

I mean you could definitely do a similar fish out of water thing with any non-posh WASPy white dude. That’s true. It would be very different in however you create that character though.

Yeah it’s pretty much all in relation to real context and history. Not talking about stuff that isn’t real like mermaids.

I’m not going to dismiss it out of hand but you need to provide better examples than saying a mermaid, a fictional creature, can only be white.
