A Complete Unknown - 8/10
I had my doubts but Chalamet’s got the goods. Elite performances all around.

Got the goods, playing Bob Dylan, really? You can't swing a dead cat and not hit a hobo off the street that looks and sings like him. I guess Bobby went through some shit.

Townes Van Zandt is probably better than Bob Dylan in every way imaginable. Yet nobody knows who he was at all.

Babygirl - 7.5/10
Opens with Antonio Banderas fucking Nicole Kidman. She fakes an orgasm and then scurries off to another room and jacks off to porn for a few minutes. I liked this one! Good little inversion of the 80s-90s erotic thriller. Doesn’t quite stick the landing but I had fun.

Y2K. Garbage film. Watched it thinking it would be dumb fun. Nope, just dumb. It's like it wanted to be a spoof of 90's teen sex comedies, but didn't understand what a spoof is.

The Brutalist - 9/10
Immense in every way, like the classic American epics of the 50s-70s. The first two thirds is perfection. Not sure how I feel about the last hour but it was very thought-provoking. Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce were incredible. Beautiful score, filmed in gorgeous VistaVision. Should be the front-runner for Best Picture. Also really liked the 15 minute intermission, thought it was great for the pacing.

Forgot to post this one last week…
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera - 7.5/10
I would be cool with seeing a combo of Big Nick being Big Nick + complex heists as a formula in this franchise for the next decade. Felt like a love letter to Ronin as much as the first was a love letter to Heat. Dudes rock.

Presence - 8/10
Not really a horror movie but one of the most interesting interpretations of a ghost story you’ll see. Really unnerving and affecting.

Watched Cold Steel (1987) earlier today.
Generic action movie, largely speaking. It did have a younger Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) in it, which was sort of fun. Also had Sharon Stone, who I don't personally know from anything, but I do know she's a big name.
Even so, the whole thing was sort of weak. Not a bad film, but pretty middling.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
No one really said anything about this on here, holy shit, I gotta let it simmer, but it's one of the best war movies I've ever seen and I'm sorry I slept on it for so long. I was locked in from start to finish. I've always wondered where the kick ass WW1 movies were, WW2 and Vietnam monopolized it all. This one is just all around excellent. Definitely hurting for our skinny little sauerkraut Paul by the end.
It funny, 20 years ago I was total Rambo Commando, gimme a rocket launcher war fuck yeah chest beater. Now, give me a joint, some boobies and crank some tunes and I'll easy rider my hippie ass the fuck out of that bullshit.

I didn't say anything about this one? I saw it during its competition/Oscar year and thought highly of it, but now I can't remember if I did say anything here on it lol.
Yeah, it's pretty excellent. And that score, so simple yet so goddamn effective.

Sinners - A
Just a little over two hours but there is so much movie in this movie. Yes it’s heavily indebted to From Dusk till Dawn and it delivers on the vampire horror goodies you’ve expecting. But it’s also an excellent period piece of Jim Crow Mississippi and most unexpectedly and delightfully, a totally captivating celebration of hundreds of years of music history all packed into a pretty flawlessly constructed three acts that also throws two major curveballs that are so audacious and bold, it doesn’t really matter if they completely work for you because it will deliver on the shock and awe. It’s fun, it’s smart, it’s pulsating with energy. Was at different points laughing, bobbing my head, squirming in my seat and left in stunned silence. It’s kind of everything you could ask for from a movie theater experience. Not trying to overhype but I really loved it and I can’t wait to see it again very soon.

Also, absolutely critical to stay through the credits. It’s not some MCU wink nod bullshit, it’s a real finishing touch on the story.

It was fun early 80's slasher. Not one of the best but still fun.
