Contract still plays into it, but today you just roll up the truck for a guy like Champ. As long as NFL income increases so the cap goes up like it has been, he becomes a value pretty quick even if you overpay in the beginning.Headhunter wrote:I don't think a trade like that happens in today's NFL. Second round pick and the best corner in the game for a running back just seems insane now.Jason wrote:I was in my mid-teens during the Portis-Bailey trade. I only vaguely remember being kind of numb to it and not knowing how the hell to react. Portis was clearly the guy and we sent him packing after his two best years. I was just kind of like "WOW... Ok..."
Great trade. Totally fun trade, and as the years went on, it became clear that Denver was the big winner in it.

Aqib Talib and Chris Harris are the 17th and 20th highest paid corners in the league right now. Elway bet big on the new TV deals with his 2014 spending spree and Denver is still in great cap position today.Foo wrote:Contract still plays into it, but today you just roll up the truck for a guy like Champ. Also check out this insane graphic.
The Broncos have been the only big spender in recent years to actually win. Unprecedented how they built a contender through free agency.

Four or five times today he just needed to step up in the pocket and he would hsve been fine but didn't. Menelik Watson and Max Garcia suck, but Siemian has put this team in horrible positions every week not knowing how to manuever around the pocket.
He has improved in quite a few areas this year but he now gets shell shocked by even a suspicion of pressure. Not good enough.

Re: NFL 2017 season
The pass rushers league-wide are better than the offensive lines and it's not close. That's reality and if you ask me, it's the biggest story in the NFL over the past few years. Ask coaches and they'll tell you college spread offenses and limited OTAs have KILLED offensive line play. So it's no longer an excuse to wilt under pressure. This is the new normal for QBs and the great ones overcome.

Re: NFL 2017 season
It really is. Manning was obviously key there to both jack up spending and wins. Not saying guys like Ware were not contributors, but landing a QB who played at that level as a free agent is super rare.Headhunter wrote:Also check out this insane graphic.

Main reason why I am still not sold on Elway as an untouchable GM. The whole Elway era plays out a lot different absent that move. He did make it, though, so props.
How are they calculating free agent spending? For instance, did Jacksonville actually realize all that spending?

They closed the deal when Peyton was washed up though. Not even 200 yards of offense in the Super Bowl, didn't have a single legit touchdown drive and still won by 14. The Ware/Talib/Ward offseason turned the Broncos into a defensive powerhouse.Foo wrote:It really is. Manning was obviously key there to both jack up spending and wins. Elway's flexibility is underrated. When the video game offense got exposed by Seattle, he shifted the team's identity to a defensive one.
As for your last question, I honestly don't know. Would obviously be more useful if it only factored in realized or guaranteed dollars.

Who did Jacksonville spend all that money on? I know Julius Thomas was a big number. But I would also assume at least half was not realized.

It's a disgusting group. The only real standout in that period was Malik Jackson. Bunch of average players otherwise.Foo wrote:Who did Jacksonville spend all that money on? I know Julius Thomas was a big number. But I would also assume at least half was not realized.

Re: NFL 2017 season
ESPN was on at the gym, today. The topic of discussion said "Dolphins OL coach Chris Foerster resigning. Video shows him snorting white, powdery substance."
Gee, wonder what the fuck that could be.

If I were there, and that guy that got punched happened to be my Pops or something, that mother fucker would've been hospitalized. Enraging.
As far as this being a Raiders home game, the only difference is everybody in the stadium would've gotten involved. :p

"This behavior will not be condoned at Bank of America stadium."
lol. Remember when stadium names used to be cool? "This behavior will not be condoned at Men's Warehouse Field, where you're gonna like the way you look, I guarantee it. Unless you get punched."
