And the Elijah Wood is the good one. The original is the GREAT one.

Re: What are you watching?
The appeal of Maniac is how huge and intimidating Joe Spinell is. That stalking scene when she was alone in the Subway gave you a feeling of impending doom.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Yep, cause all real serial killers are hulking jujitsu badassess...Jason wrote:Your girl would whoop that dude's ass.Tiggnutz wrote:You mean the better one with Elijah WoodJason wrote:The good one or the Zac Efron one?DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Last Drive-In: Maniac

Re: What are you watching?
I never saw Spinell as huge, I thought his appeal was how realistically ugly he was, and his magnificent performance, combined with the unapologetically real vibe of that dirty early 80's NYC.
The Wood one's appeal goes more the POV perspective, plus Wood's less suspecting serial killer, which is more often the true case of the real ones, which is why people are so surprised so and so could do those things.
But yeah, the old one's still greater.

Re: What are you watching?
Jebus, Tom Savini took a pay of only 5 grand for Maniac, just so he could live in New York lol.

The best part of Maniac is Abigail Clayton

Re: What are you watching?
i never get this argument. the impending doom of that subway scene was not because he was hulking force. it was in the suspense, and the false relief for a moment that made it effective.Jason wrote:

Alls I'm saying is if a woman is alone in a Subway with Elijah Wood, she wouldn't be in much suspense. New York was probably badass back in the day.
Re: What are you watching?
psycho was effective despite norman bates not being a big guy. red eye was effective despite jackson rippner (cillian murphy) not being a big guy. *shrug*Jason wrote:Alls I'm saying is if a woman is alone in a Subway with Elijah Wood, she wouldn't be in much suspense. Psycho was effective in that we thought his mother was doing it only to find out how deeply disturbed he was psychologically. Why did the 6'5" Vince Vaughn Psycho suck so bad? :pzombie wrote:psycho was effective despite norman bates not being a big guy. red eye was effective despite jackson rippner (cillian murphy) not being a big guy. *shrug*Jason wrote:Alls I'm saying is if a woman is alone in a Subway with Elijah Wood, she wouldn't be in much suspense. Re: What are you watching?
Is there a movie where the ugly chubby guy with "creep" eyes is the red herring for the killer, who turns out to be an ordinary unthreatening guy? (and both are main characters in the cast, no cameo red herring crap).
Actually, Orville Ketchum was kind of a red herring ugly chubby guy, though Sorority House Massacre 2 was a bit of a parody.
I'm thinking of something that's more serious, so it could be more true to life, and plays with the audience expectations that the ugly chubby creep is the killer.

Re: What are you watching?
the psycho remake doesn't match the original, because it tried to be a copy in most ways. and the acting was pretty stiff.Jason wrote:Psycho was effective in that we thought his mother was doing it only to find out how deeply disturbed he was psychologically. the two maniac's are different kinds of films, and they work in their own ways, as horror films.
Re: What are you watching?
I just think intimidation was the primary drawing point in Maniac and Joe Spinell delivered brilliantly.
