The one that's on The Last Drive-In.

And the Elijah Wood is the good one. The original is the GREAT one.

The appeal of Maniac is how huge and intimidating Joe Spinell is. That stalking scene when she was alone in the Subway gave you a feeling of impending doom.

If a woman is alone with Elijah Wood, just fight back. :p

I never saw Spinell as huge, I thought his appeal was how realistically ugly he was, and his magnificent performance, combined with the unapologetically real vibe of that dirty early 80's NYC.

The Wood one's appeal goes more the POV perspective, plus Wood's less suspecting serial killer, which is more often the true case of the real ones, which is why people are so surprised so and so could do those things.

But yeah, the old one's still greater.

Jebus, Tom Savini took a pay of only 5 grand for Maniac, just so he could live in New York lol.

i never get this argument. the impending doom of that subway scene was not because he was hulking force. it was in the suspense, and the false relief for a moment that made it effective.

Alls I'm saying is if a woman is alone in a Subway with Elijah Wood, she wouldn't be in much suspense. Lol.

psycho was effective despite norman bates not being a big guy. red eye was effective despite jackson rippner (cillian murphy) not being a big guy. *shrug*

Psycho was effective in that we thought his mother was doing it only to find out how deeply disturbed he was psychologically. Why did the 6'5" Vince Vaughn Psycho suck so bad? :p

Is there a movie where the ugly chubby guy with "creep" eyes is the red herring for the killer, who turns out to be an ordinary unthreatening guy? (and both are main characters in the cast, no cameo red herring crap).

Actually, Orville Ketchum was kind of a red herring ugly chubby guy, though Sorority House Massacre 2 was a bit of a parody.

I'm thinking of something that's more serious, so it could be more true to life, and plays with the audience expectations that the ugly chubby creep is the killer.

the psycho remake doesn't match the original, because it tried to be a copy in most ways. and the acting was pretty stiff.

the two maniac's are different kinds of films, and they work in their own ways, as horror films.

I just think intimidation was the primary drawing point in Maniac and Joe Spinell delivered brilliantly.
