At my job, we are told to prevent theft, but not be physically aggressive about it. Deter them, but don't touch. It was a fucking candy bar. No need to go postal about it. Kid started the situation by doing the wrong thing, but the escalations were a choice. To quote Frozen "Let it Go". It was not armed robbery. We're at a tipping point. How many times in the 70s or 80s did kids steal stuff from stores as a prank? Never made the news. Never got physical. Race has nothing to do with it. Common sense does. Again, one must decide where to stand their ground, owner went too far. Who was really defending themselves here? I mean, c'non.
