ease the tensions back down? i'm not mediating by trying to tell you what to say or not to say, but by trying to ensure that people aren't feeling attacked. it can be good for the thread and for the community as a whole.

I feel like I have to bend over backwards every time I point out something from a lunatic fringe contingent to show that I'm not grouping tens of millions together. And I have no problem with that, it's touchy territory and you want to be careful.

okay. you should never have to feel like that, that you have to walk on eggshells in a discussion. and i think that becoming polarized, as a culture or society, is where that comes from. it's an us vs. them mentality to the extreme. and i do see some of it on hmf. like trying to make the argument recently that if you criticize a cop, you want cops to be robots or be shot first or whatever.

People weaponize that "walking on eggshells" stuff too. Half the reactions you'll see are genuinely people being offended because they misinterpreted who you're being critical of, and the other half is people who know damn well you're making the appropriate distinctions but want to play dumb and feign outrage because it's easy to.
