*fives* The Mashed potatoes followed by the bird itself are my faves.

I like turkey when I make it, but people tend to overcook it horribly so it's hit or miss at Thanksgiving. Very rarely have I had bad mashed potatoes (attempted loaded mashed potatoes with under-cooked bacon, was like little stringy worms in the potatoes), they are the safest bet at family dinners. I tend to pretty much just eat veggies cause they are hard to screw up. :) My family is not blessed with great cooks, they are mediocre at best.

I don't like that marshmallow and sweet potato disaster people make. Also, keep the turkey liver away from the gravy.

I like to think you onion haters will have that moment where you take off your tastebud sunglasses and see how much light there is in the world.

They are so ubiquitous. It would be like hating water. Practically every cuisine has onion as a base flavor:

- celery, onion, carrot
- green pepper, onion, celery
- garlic, onion, olive oil
- garlic, onion, ginger
- cilantro, onion, cumin

it goes on an on.

that's cause the flavor is yummy. *has eaten grilled cheese with caramelized onion sandwiches*

Was his dad happy though?
He did like it. He was a heavy tobacco chewer, so he liked strong flavors.

Better than under-cooked, I've had that experience and I'll take over-cooked.

Fully agree. So disappointing when the only sweet potatoes are either swimming in syrup or coated in marshmallows. :( The gravy I can usually skate by without, but skipping sweet potatoes is just wrong :P

that is true, so long as the gravy is good, overcooked bird can be saved. Bad gravy and I'm skipping it altogether :P

Figured, seems onions are love or hate, not seen real in between. It's put it on or get it the fuck off type of shiz.

I have a cousin who will eat onion rings (specifically bk's onion rings which are minced onion formed into rings rather than solid onion slices), funyuns, and onion flavored things, but if there's actual onion he flips out. I think it's a texture thing for him rather than a flavor thing.

That's when you leave to hit up a local burger place once all the family pleasantries are done. Fuck that noise.

I just like them roasted. We do whole roasted topped with chipotle maple butter, then bbq pork on the truck sometimes. For Thanksgiving, just salt, pepper, and butter for me. Especially if they are nicely roasted they are sweet on their own.

I'm generally a meat and potatoes guy. Gimme the turkey, steak, chicken, ham etc. with some mashed, baked, scalloped etc. potatoes I'm good. Obviously gravy in some instances, and after that the other sides are just more gravy.

Tonight's dinner (which we'll eat at four, as I have to wake up at 1:00 am for work tomorrow morning) will include:

Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Asparagus
Green bean casserole
Stuffing (least interesting portion)

Pumpkin pie (dessert)

you lost me at the pork. Chicken and I'd be game. I don't know why but pork grosses me out.

Yes! that is my favorite way to do them, they don't need anything else.
