The Other Side of the Wind

Orson Welles' last project filmed in the 1970s, pieced together and released either today or yesterday on Netflix. It's a mockumentary about the last day in a director's life. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it. Really a movie about the direction of the film industry in that era. It's objectively brilliant but just a really weird watch, cutting between black-and-white and color and different film gauges. A lot of the scenes have a found footage feel to them. I'll probably rewatch this one at some point. For now, I reward it with a B+ because there's a lot of greatness in it, it's just too strange to feel satisfying.

A24 crime caper with a criminal played (excellently) by Robert Pattinson needing to come up with 10,000 dollars in a night to bail his retarded brother out of prison. Just a 90 minute dive into some New York City underbelly elements with a really grim tone throughout. Very good movie that will make you uncomfortable with how real it feels in portraying low level criminals. It's on Netflix, check it out.

They Shall Not Grow Old - A+

This is one of those moments in cinema where something profound has happened which opens up some significant change for an entire period of history that we struggle to identify with properly. What Peter Jackson has done is as impressive as it is haunting. Not only does it bring the pictures to life, it properly immersed you into the whole experience of war at its worst for a very brief moment. The stories you hear and the new pictures you see are terrifying. I hadn’t really watched a documentary or anything similar that shows the actual aftermath including decaying corpses and injuries in this way. To have this shown in color and restored properly and to such a high degree of precision is just amazing. It is s triumph on two levels. First, it tells a compelling story and narrative about the war, but not just the horrors or the shock of it all. It feels human. It has humour and pride, confusion and terror, and disappointment and hope in equal measures throughout the film. Second, it renders WW1 footage as at normal speed, with sound, and playing at an expected frame rate, and in actual vivid color which makes it so much more real and in that sense engrossing. Third, it manages the masterful use of research to present a sincere and accurate portrayal of stages in a war whose attention to minor details is classic Jackson but also so impressive.

Would strongly and highly recommend this to anyone who likes history or cinenatic achievements. Stunning.

Halloween (2018)

I expected a fairly good movie, but I underestimated it. Quite loved it. A (mostly) no nonsense horror flick that was serious and straight forward with the approach. I could've done without some of the forced humor, particularly between the babysitter and the foul mouthed black kid. Kinda took me out of the horror element, but it got back on track pretty quickly.

The only gripe I have is the Loomis protege heel turn. Really didn't sit well with me at all. This was a really straightforward movie about Michael and Laurie and the doc heel turn made it less about Halloween. We were headed down a beautifully paved, one lane highway and all of a sudden we veered off onto the dirt and into the weeds. The hell was that for? Anyway, I was hoping they'd kill him off quickly, and thankfully he was, but save the cheap plot twist for the jump scare specials that make up 9 out of 10 horror movies today.

Other than that gripe, the movie was very good. I loved following Michael along as he hopped houses and killed people. Also loved that children were fair game when that youngster got killed in the pickup. Fairly ballsy Halloween flick, and among the better half of the franchise.

I took my niece to see The Wizard of Oz. It was something we watched often when she was little and I thought it'd be fun to see at the theater. she's 17 now so I wasn't sure if she'd think it was cool or lame. But she seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience. Good time.

Why didn't nobody go out and watch Overlord? It was a pretty solid WW2/Horror flick. It knew exactly what it needed to be and kept an entertaining pace for almost two hours. Good story building that gradually builds up to the horror aspect. It's not a crazy zombie movie like you would expect, more along the lines of unkillable super soilder type zombies and it's violent when it's warranted as well. Is it game changing? No, but I want to see more shit like this in theaters instead of poorly edited non sense such as Slender Man.

I'm watching Overlord this Saturday. Planned on it last weekend, but the friend we were going with came down sick, and I think it's a dick move to go without him (especially since he really wanted to go).

Sometimes a Great Notion (1970) - A

One of the most underrated movies ever and a quintessentially American story with a phenomenal cast. About a family of loggers in Oregon who continue to work while the rest of the town is on strike. It's very much a movie of its time (conservative, family-oriented rural America clashing with younger, progressive urban America) and has one of the best death scenes in movie history. Highly recommend this one.

Creed II

Outstanding. I love what they did with the Dragos. They weren't the one dimensional machines some folks might expect. They were actually fairly sympathetic. Can't say much more on that without giving anything away. Jordan and Sly were as good as ever. I also loved the use of the Rocky theme, which was well timed and gave me the chills. Solid sequel. Did not disappoint in the slightest.
