Weird idea that Ukraine would become Afghanistan. It’s a moderately uninteresting Eastern European country. The two don’t seem at all comparable.

It’s not supposed to be apples to apples but there are parallels in a Russian invasion with the native insurgency supported by the US with all the weapons and training they could ask for, up to and including supporting extremist right-wing paramilitary groups (Neo-Nazis instead of radical Jihadists in this case). This conflict will end but it will be many years before the effects of dumping all these weapons into Ukraine, where they’ll inevitably end up in the hands of largely the worst and scariest people, are understood.

But really Ukraine is and was fucked no matter how this all goes. In the best case scenario where their “sovereignty” is restored and the far right is kept in check, the US will be setting up shop to continue plundering its economy as it did for seven years. The level of poverty prior to the invasion was already unthinkable, it was essentially treated as a third world country by the West, which means draining from the bottom. They drink their milkshake.

I guess there could be an element of that, but it’s also a much more civilized and progressive society than Afghanistan and much more centralized rule and at least to some extent laws and regulations that govern then. So I’d think that would stem some of the negatives that you’re describing. I don’t think we will see armed insurrection by neo nazis if they defeat Russia.
