I'm not sure any one thing defined 80s horror. It truly had it all. Everything.zombie wrote:okay. yeah, they don't really give him a backstory beyond the tragedy. there is that.Jason wrote:Mystery, as in you don't know diddily poo about him.zombie wrote:also, there is no mystery about the killer in the burning. you know right away...
There is still mystery in modern horror, too, though. 90s horror, 2000s horror. I just think the 80s completely aced it. Especially in the slasher aspect. There was always a kind of mystery behind Jason, Michael. Even though we saw them 11 times in the 80s.
i'm not trying to be contrary. there was, of course, mystery in some 80s horror, as there is still some today. but i don't think that is really what defined the genre in the 80s. if that makes sense. mystery and suspense seemed to be the defining factor in 70s horror, at least to me.
creativity and camp seemed to be the defining factor for 80s horror, again my estimation.Jason wrote:I'm not sure any one thing defined 80s horror. It truly had it all. Yeah, I get a Sleepaway Camp feel (or to be chronologically fair, I get a Burning feel with Sleepaway Camp), but mostly because it was camp, and the kids within it operate similarly. Definitely don't get a rip-off vibe. Sleepaway Camp was its own flick, with its own kills and its own killer.zombie wrote:does the burning have any kind of sleepaway camp feel to you? like it was ripped off or anything?
Yeah, when you think campy horror you definitely think 80s. I just mean that all those hundreds of horror flicks had it all. Serious horror, comedic horror, campy horror, vampire horror, zombie horror, werewolf horror, supernatural horror... and each of those subgenres had a ton of special flicks.zombie wrote:creativity and camp seemed to be the defining factor for 80s horror, again my estimation.Jason wrote:I'm not sure any one thing defined 80s horror. hmm.. i'll have to give the burning another go. they do both have a summer camp setting. so maybe that's all jig was getting at too. i don't know.Jason wrote:Yeah, I get a Sleepaway Camp feel (or to be chronologically fair, I get a Burning feel with Sleepaway Camp), but mostly because it was camp, and the kids within it operate similarly. Same, I saw it a few years into HMF as well. I've been aware of it before hand, but like Maniac, never got around to watching it.zombie wrote:you were a latecomer on the burning too? i hadn't seen it at all until a couple of years into hmf. i remember having to ask foo if i had the right picture for cropsy for a big collage thing i made back then.
maniac too. and yeah, i'm with you on the preference as well.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:Same, I saw it a few years into HMF as well. Out of the two, I definitely loved Maniac more.
