The nude scenes. I feel like kind of a perv watching them now. :p
Weird, because I've known, loved, and watched these movies since I was a wee lad.

The Wolfie's Just Fine song "A New Beginning" said it best... "Back then you were so much older than me, but now you're a child".

Mystery, as in you don't know diddily poo about him.

There is still mystery in modern horror, too, though. 90s horror, 2000s horror. I just think the 80s completely aced it. Especially in the slasher aspect. There was always a kind of mystery behind Jason, Michael. Even though we saw them 11 times in the 80s.
okay. yeah, they don't really give him a backstory beyond the tragedy. there is that.

i'm not trying to be contrary. there was, of course, mystery in some 80s horror, as there is still some today. but i don't think that is really what defined the genre in the 80s. if that makes sense. mystery and suspense seemed to be the defining factor in 70s horror, at least to me.
I'm not sure any one thing defined 80s horror. It truly had it all. Everything.

does the burning have any kind of sleepaway camp feel to you? like it was ripped off or anything?

creativity and camp seemed to be the defining factor for 80s horror, again my estimation.

Yeah, I get a Sleepaway Camp feel (or to be chronologically fair, I get a Burning feel with Sleepaway Camp), but mostly because it was camp, and the kids within it operate similarly. Definitely don't get a rip-off vibe. Sleepaway Camp was its own flick, with its own kills and its own killer.

Yeah, when you think campy horror you definitely think 80s. I just mean that all those hundreds of horror flicks had it all. Serious horror, comedic horror, campy horror, vampire horror, zombie horror, werewolf horror, supernatural horror... and each of those subgenres had a ton of special flicks.

An interesting aside, I heard Madman had to change its script almost entirely when the Burning was released because it resembled it too much.

hmm.. i'll have to give the burning another go. they do both have a summer camp setting. so maybe that's all jig was getting at too. i don't know.

each subgenre was very well represented, agreed.

I saw Sleepaway Camp like 20 times before I saw The Burning, so I was already used to it. Helps distinguish the two better than having only moderate knowledge of each. Jig is probably in the latter portion.

Receipt in my DVD case says I bought it in early April 2011. I'm certain I never saw it before then. So I watched it for the first time less than 7 years ago.

Same, I saw it a few years into HMF as well. I've been aware of it before hand, but like Maniac, never got around to watching it.

Out of the two, I definitely loved Maniac more.

I think I will prefer The Burning after this rewatch. Beforehand I would've probably put Maniac above it, but I am really feeling The Burning right now. Maybe I'll give Maniac a go again after The Burning!
