Survival Skills. Started off as a comedy, then shit got serious and really fucking depressing, then the last ten minutes happen. Strange film.

I'm not sure what the movie was about. A group of folks traveling from A to B, killing and dying along the way. The end.
Yeah, that one kept bugging me when it came to reviews, so I watched it and wasn't all too impressed with it. The Nightingale has a better opening with family murder/revenge and if I wanted something bleak in storytelling, I'd watch Brimstone with Guy Pierce again. Which is a better movie if you haven't seen it yet.
I have not. It's on Tubi so I'll check it out.

Mank ......... A

Given the topic, I shouldn't be too surprised it isn't as engaging as many of Fincher's other movies, however it is still pin-point gorgeous, the performances are amazing, that score from Trent Reznor and Atticuss Ross sounding nothing like they've done before and is simply gorgeous. Right now it's topping my list for 2020, but I've yet to be super-blown away by any output from this year. It is the best from Fincher since The Social Network. If this winds up being Fincher's big Oscar win movie, at least it's for this, and not the waste bleh that was Benjamin Buttnuts.

3615 code Père Noël aka Game Over aka Deadly Games aka Dial Code Santa Claus aka Hide and Freak. Gotta love the multiple names foreign films have. Killer Santa film I haven't seen yet from france. It's a weird mix of a Richey Rich type kid that goes all Kevin McCallister on Santa after he kills the kid's dog. It's like horror version of Home Alone. Funny thing is, this came out before Home Alone, so I wonder if this somehow inspired it.

Deathcember. Anthology of twenty-six short horror "films" based around christmas. One was decent.

What Lies Below. Sci-fi horror that gets confusing, but is ok. There's a scene with a car that makes fuckall sense, and is only there to strand the girl. Scenes like that are the worst, but otherwise it's tolerable.

Border. Weird film...then the sex happens and things get even weirder. And then shit gets fucked. I was not expecting any of what I got out of this.

Shortcut. No shortcuts were taken in the film, though they did take a detour. It's barely over an hour, but it's alright. Decent creature, but it plays out more like a long Are You Afraid of the Dark episode or something. Also, I don't think it was intended, but the ending is kinda fucked up if you think about it.

Black Pumpkin. Not bad. Very low budget, bad acting, bad effects, but it wasn't a bunch of idiots phoning it in, they actually tried to make a film. That alone puts it far above most of the garbage I've seen recently. It would fit in easily with a bunch of 80's films I enjoy, and even has potential for a franchise. This is one of those films that was only held back by the budget. Worth a watch.

I Stand Alone

A gloomy film about a down on his luck man where nothing goes right. Narrated by the main protagonist who proclaims his hatred to everything and everybody he goes on a quest for a new beginning, but fails. He locks his mute daughter away in a mental asylum to start a new life with his pregnant and overweight girlfriend who only thinks of herself, main guy can't hold a job and after being accused of cheating, he punches his pregnant girlfriend repeatedly in the belly and leaves town to escape Police. Venturing back to his hometown, he tries to find old partners from his Meat Butchering days and can't get hired. In frustration he starts back mouthing those he comes in contact with and decides he wants to kill, but he only has 3 bullets, so he goes back and forth on deciding his form of action. He ultimately decides to go pick up his Daughter from the asylum, taking her back to his small motel room and deliberates whether to have sex with his daughter, kill her and then kill himself.

This might not be the most engrossing film, but I liked the mean streak the film seemed to have from start to finish. The main character is just a giant prick who just wants peaceful life, but can't seem to get it without always encountering a problem. His out-look on society and the way of telling others how to live can be humorous as well. The last 20 minutes is when the film decides to go a more violent approach with suicide and elements of incest, more so not shying away from violence. There's this entire morality monologue and what should be considered right and wrong in the realms of society.

It's a okay watch for those wanting something darker in the realm of something like Combat Shock, Taxi Driver or films of that nature of a one person who can't seem to find happiness. Not a bad film, could be considered too slow, but it's a character study and films such as that tend to be on the slower side.

It's a Netflix show about English gangsters in the early 1900's. Top notch television.

So John, can you give us a typical example of what you'd rate a 10, 5, 1 on your scale, to give perspective. Ya see, we have this member who shall remain nameless named Jiggy, who has this impossibly retarded scale when rating movies. So inquiring minds want to know.
