In the main EU, the nonsense from Italy, riots in France, Brexit, end of Merkel era, and rise of populists in Poland and the north are all equally troubling.

Because it wasn't progress and it wasn't earned. It was the equivalent of unsustainable credit card spending. Now that sacrifices need to be made by the beneficiaries of social programs, it is all unraveling.
