Not sure what's going on here, but Freddy Krueger and McFly's Delorean have me curious.

Loved the book, but the trailer was mostly stuff that's not in the book, so I'm not too thrilled with it. Looks like it'll be fun, though, even if it's not a good adaptation.

Not familiar at all, but definitely interested with all the references.

I yearn for movies that aren't wild and visual spectacles.

You should read the book, I think you'll like it. It's basically a sci-fi action book set in a video game world based around 80's nostalgia. I was hooked when the Tomb of Horrors became a plot point.

This is based off a sci-fi action book, 90% of which takes place inside a video game where anything is possible, so you're looking in the wrong place.

Watched this earlier today. It's a fun film, but is a shit adaptation. They took the basic premise(game, dead creator, easter egg, an evil conglomeration), but changed all the details. Very little of what happens in the film is from the book, which is disappointing to say the least. If you haven't read the book, you'll probably like it if you're into somewhat goofy adventure/sci-fi shit. If you have read the book, the changes are almost cringe-worthy. Spoilers for the film and book below.

First were the major plot points(i.e. the three keys and how to get them). I was really looking forward to the D&D Tomb of Horrors bit, but it was replaced with a race....a fucking race! Couldn't they have at least come up with something in the same genre? The Wargames scene was changed to The Shining, which should make people here happy. While I'm not a fan of the film, it was still fun to see how they handled it. The last key was close to how it was in the book, but again, alot of the details were changed.

Then there were the characters. Daito and Shoto were distrustful of everyone in the book until much later. In the film, they basically are buddies with Aech from the start. Also, Daito wasn't killed in the film, which was a major character motivation for Shoto in the book. In the book, Wade was a fat kid and later gets into shape when dealing with all the crazy shit going on. He's also broke, and played a pretty big role in defining him in the beginning. In the film, he's about average weight and while the money thing is briefly mentioned, it's taken care of in under thirty minutes. Just about everything involving Artemis was changed, outside of her birthmark. Og was nowhere to be seen except in flashbacks and at the very end. I-Rok went from being a random douche to being a major villain/comic relief.

"The resistance". What the fuck is the resistance? No such thing in the book, and only mentioned as a way to get Samantha and Wade together. In the book, they don't meet in real life until the very end. Literally, it's the last damned thing that happens in the book.

The war. Only a couple giant robots. I understand they couldn't get access to everything, but man, I wanted to see some Voltron.

The film was nowhere near as bleak as it was in the book. The future was a depressing dystopian-like place, whereas in the film, it's just kinda shitty, but basically the same as now.

The references. The book is a love letter to the 80's. Everything revolves around the culture of the 80's and, while there are other things out there, that's just about all that's mentioned. In the film, it looks to be mostly 90's, with some 80's references and others from even later. I did not need an Overwatch character in this film. Or the shitty Michael Bay Ninja Turtles.

There's alot more that was changed, but these were the ones that stood out the most to me. I know shit couldn't be put in because of rights issues, and things needed to be changed because it's a different medium, but man, it's like they didn't even try on most of this shit.

I mentioned to my friend that I would've loved Voltron to appear and take down MechaGodzilla...lol

I don’t get who this film was for. The main character was generic as fuck and not an exciting guy. The action is pure modern jumble with no focal points and scale only. Scale works in LotR because there’s thousands of identical people either side. I can see orcs killing elves and any closeup I can quickly discern who is on what side. Here there’s just random characters and robots and suits all being cut to. Meanwhile the references are all old. I mean I loved The Shining and Jason and Freddy etc. but most youngsters aren’t going to get half the references. And those who get references will hate the film style surely.

Also, maybe I’m getting old, but the Spielberg “bow” endings are not working for me anymore.

Most seem to love the style and get the old references (which they're supposed to be, the inventor loved the 80's, it's the point). Sure, not all, but most are digging it.

Yes, the main guy is pretty bland. I'm not even sure if it's the actor's fault.

It felt too glossy for the older crowd but maybe I misread my theater. It can still work but it feels like the 70-80s crowd aren’t looking for shitty teen romcom and there were simply too mNy Easter eggs to even visually process.
