The Shining (1980), then some people would stop bitching at me. Not my fault it's not as good as the 1997 mini-series...
For my thoughts on the horror films I've seen, please look here: https://jigsawshorrorcorner.wordpress.com/

I'll give you Rebecca de Mornay, and that's it.Jigsaw wrote:The Shining (1980), then some people would stop bitching at me. Not my fault it's not as good as the 1997 mini-series...

And even then, she's really only hotter (much hotter, like worlds apart hotter). Shelly's version is a much stronger psychological study of a victim of abuse. As a kid I used to think she was bad, but as an adult, I see the reason she sounds unconvincing in many scenes is because she's lying to herself as well as other people...and she's not that good at it, and the viewer gets to sense something's off. She looks strung out from the get go.Jason wrote:I'll give you Rebecca de Mornay, and that's it.Jigsaw wrote:The Shining (1980), then some people would stop bitching at me. I really don't think most purists would've had this amount of hate towards' Kubrick's version is King didn't have a hissy fit gut reaction (after not being allowed on set or write the screenplay himself even though that wasn't part of the deal, so he went into production with a sour point of view already). Want to know how his ideas would look on film? Watch the implausibly shitty 97 miniseries. It hits themes King cried about not being included, yet it's incredly bad melodrama with a cheesy redemption ending, not remotely frightening (I'm not talking jump scare frightening, I'm talking about atmosphere). How could they actually shoot in the Stanley Hotel, King's inspiration in the first place...and still not have a shred of creepy atmosphere? Fucking Ghosthunters shot specials at the Stanley Hotel that gave off spookier vibes. Yeah, it's made for tv, but it's still possible (look at how well Hooper's Salem's Lot holds up). I'd say it's Mick Garris' biggest fuck up, but along came Desperation years later...

Not that I hated it. But the love I regularly see makes me go "what the fuck? am I getting trolled here?" I don't get it.
Althought it might not be along the lines of what you're thinking, because critics hated Boondock Saints too. Like...worse than Rob Zombie's H2 reviews bad from what I recall.

Trying to think of one I really hated that everyone loved though. Seems tough. There's plenty I was very disappointed by given the passionate fanbase (Boondock Saints, Sleepaway Camp, The Matrix) but not getting one I hated come to mind.

The one thing I understand from King's perspective is when he said Jack Nicholson already looks crazy. Which is true. I know he wanted a Walter White type who you'd never expect to go psycho and try to kill his family, but Nicholson at the time was primarily known for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest. So I get the frustration. lol. But I still dig the shit out of it.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:And even then, she's really only hotter (much hotter, like worlds apart hotter). I remember him having a shortlist of who he'd prefer, but as good in general as they were (I don't remember who they were off hand), and could sell a "wholesome" figure, I remember none of them giving me the vibe that they can do the descent into madness. One of them could have been surprising, but, I love what we got instead.Jason wrote:The one thing I understand from King's perspective is when he said Jack Nicholson already looks crazy. Who would your cast & crew on a modern re-adaption of The Shining? Not remake, just a new adaption of the book.

Kinda past the age zone, but he still looks youthful enough to probably pass, but I could really see Tom Cruise as Jack Torrence...I can't seem to get that thought out of my mind.
