Is Tom Cruise the Greatest Movie Star of All Time?

Certainly could make a case. Very strong filmography, long career that is still going strong, diverse, and a ton of hits. If he transitions out of action into a different set of roles as he ages, I think it would be difficult to deny.

I think he's excellent at what he does and is arguably one of the most bankable stars. But I don't think I'd go much further than that personally. Great in terms of ability to get tokes. I'm not sure he's great IN roles. Aside from if you need someone to run. Run fast.
Re: Is Tom Cruise the Greatest Movie Star of All Time?
I have not, but I would point to your love of Jack Reacher as more evidence. Those movies would be career defining for almost anyone else, yet kinda get lost in his filmography.Jason wrote:Have you seen Jack Reacher?

Re: Is Tom Cruise the Greatest Movie Star of All Time?
I can think of only two films with Tom Cruise as a main character(four if including non-main roles) that I've watched more than once. All of which are from the 80's. He's just not in films I give a shit about for the most part. In the past 10-20 years, he's basically just playing the same action guy role, so I wouldn't say he's a good actor. But since this is "greatest movie star of all time" and not "greatest actor of all time", that doesn't matter. Movie stars are labeled as such for being able to put asses in seats just by name recognition alone. He does that(for some fucking reason) so sure, he could be.

It's an A+ flick, imo. And I don't give those out very often. Probably my favorite Tom Cruise flick, to be honest. Jerry Maguire is likely #2.Foo wrote:I have not, but I would point to your love of Jack Reacher as more evidence. JR's my favorite Cruise flick as well. Followed by A Few Good Men and War of the Worlds.Jason wrote:It's an A+ flick, imo. And I don't give those out very often. Re: Is Tom Cruise the Greatest Movie Star of All Time?
Up until 2005 it was easy to see it, but since then, sorry, his star is not going strong. Jack Reacher it was a dud commercially at best mediocre critically, and The Mummy did far worse (actually pretty shocking how bad it did). From what I can see, only his Mission Impossible movies keep him afloat. His over-love for Scientology explosion in 2005 really hurt his star power.
That said, his bit in Tropic Thunder was one of the coolest fucking things he's ever done, a top 5 favorite performance from me
Jerry Maguire is probably my favorite Cruise movie, closely followed by Interview With The Vampire.
Now I'm curious....*off to Flickchart*

Cocktail is sorely underrated.

While I never liked that one, I never understood all the hate either.Jason wrote:Cocktail is sorely underrated.

Low on character depth (for Cruise at least, his characters written pretty thin), amazing on pretty much everything else, lol.Jason wrote:And I still haven't seen Legend.

Keep in mind, I'm not objecting to the question in the title, if he's not he's certainly in the running (hehehe), I just thought it was funny with the claim he's still going strong, lol.

Totally forgot about A Few Good Men, too. That might rival Jerry Maguire for #2.

DiCaprio's filmography will probably blow everyone's out of the water by the time he's done. He doesn't fuck around with projects at all.
Not removing until John Elway is fired.

As far as pumping out high grossing crap movies goes, Will Smith is the king.

Looking at these lists, Brad Pitt's filmography is much more impressive.
