I like Insomnia, but probably because of its ties with the Dark Tower more than what it brings as a standalone title. I haven't read anything of King's after he "retired".

Everybody Knows - Jordan Harper

Like a James Ellroy LA book set in modern times. Enjoying it so far
Not removing until John Elway is fired.

Glad I held out on getting a new paperback of The Shining because I hated the previous several editions, and I didn't want to re-read my original hardcover again, possibly wearing it down further, because the new paperback cover is actually pretty decent.

I'm planning on rereading The Shining (just reread Carrie) for the first time in almost 20 years. Maybe I'll connect better with Book-Jack since I'm in my 40's and I won't see the "redemption arc" as a waste of space of the pure horror adrenaline as I've always seen it.

You've read a book so much it's worn out?

All my books have the crispest pages and pristine covers you'll ever find.

It's an original hardcover edition from the 70's from my dad. It's still in fairly good condition, but I know lugging it with me on the bus to read isn't going to do it favors.

You should see my paperback copy of Stephen King's It. Half the back cover is missing, and the book's seen some things, but still perfectly readable.

Yeah, Jack is still an aggro jerk from page 1. I feel I'll never understand the "importance" of a redemption arc with him since I've always read him as a douchebag. I definitely prefer the rascal type Nicholson brought that had something "bubbling" underneath that the Overlook brings to a boil than the "I'm a dick and hate everyone, and used to be an alchy, but I can be redeemed I swear!".

Almost passed The Wasp Nest part. This section has always been the roughest part for me to get through because it just further cements how dislikeable Jack is with his harassing phone calls (for no discernable reason). I mean...I get that he's behaving like he's drunk without actually drinking, but if the hardcore fans of the book didn't preach how redeamable he is just to shit on the Kubrick movie I wouldn't be so annoyed. People lie to themselves that Nicholson is "crazy from the get go" when really it shows him descending in the movie, whereas in the book, Jack is just an asshole from the get go hating everyone. He gets no sympathy from me. The "redemption" is unearned, imo.

One thing I would've liked Kubrick to keep though would be the tiny details of Jack chewing Excedrin, and the wiping his mouth frequently. Those habits would've been a nice detail.
