Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
Margeret Qually was pretty cute in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, but nothing too special, but she's definitely grown into more of a hottie. Way hotter than her mom (I never really found Andie McDowell particularly hot, just average-ish)

Like a motherfucka don't dance but he makes moves, still coming out strong, baby! Can't be doings again (maybe for Halloween), that was actually fucking exhausting.DancesWithWerewolves wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2024 9:07 pm Damn, Reign just kicked open the door today! I don't think he gets this many in all month hahaha.

It's in my theater another week. I think it got extended because I'm pretty sure I checked a couple days ago and the last day was this Thursday. It's fairly long and I won't double dip for the challenge, but I'm glad I got to see it on the big screen and would definitely prefer to own it so I'm hoping it gets a nice blu ray release.
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
I haven't been able to sit down and watch more than say 5 movies in a day since I was a teen. I watched three last night and couldn't believe it.Reign in Blood wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 9:04 amLike a motherfucka don't dance but he makes moves, still coming out strong, baby! Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
looks like the substance will be on digital by the 29th. still time to add it for the challenge!
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
It's gonna take a real badass movie to top The Substance for my favorite new watch.
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
I have some pretty glaring questions that kind of go unanswered. Wanna talk about it in a new thread for the movie or the random chat so we don't spoil the movie for anyone else?
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
Screenrant said The Substance was a nice takedown of absurd beauty standards. Or something like that. It really had far less to do with beauty standards and clearly highlighted that you should accept aging gracefully. Which is a much better message anyway. If anything it reinforced beauty standards and made me want to see more of Margaret Qualley. Lmao
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
isn't aging gracefully a take down of absurd beauty standards in itself? or what do you mean age gracefully?Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:22 pm Screenrant said The Substance was a nice takedown of absurd beauty standards. Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
No spoilers, but Demi Moore's character from the very beginning is struggling with getting older, wishing she were young and resenting the industry for wanting younger models. In the modern day you're seeing tons of older celebrities doing lip injections and botox to try to stay young and instead of aging gracefully and accepting that they look like a 50 year old person they end up looking like a 20 year old lizard after the modifications.zombie wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:25 pmisn't aging gracefully a take down of absurd beauty standards in itself? or what do you mean age gracefully?Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:22 pm Screenrant said The Substance was a nice takedown of absurd beauty standards. The "beauty standard" thing is generally regarding body size and shape rather than age and the movie itself directly deals with Demi Moore's character having to accept that she is no longer the young, sexy agile athlete she once was and it's time to move on to something new. The message I got from it was the acceptance and respecting of yourself aging rather than what your body shape is. It's pretty direct in the movie.
But you could be right in that aging gracefully is the movie's way of taking down a beauty standard. When I hear "beauty standard" I automatically jump to the general argument which is "super models being very thin/sexy is an absurd beauty standard". Demi Moore is still thin and sexy in this movie, but she is older.
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
the "beauty standard" is youth or the appearance of youth. aging gracefully in the public eye goes against the beauty standard. or at least that is the way it seems to me. i haven't seen substance yet, but x touched on that too in a way. being comfortable in your own body rather than trying to hold on to youth because that's what you're encouraged to do culturally.Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:39 pmNo spoilers, but Demi Moore's character from the very beginning is struggling with getting older, wishing she were young and resenting the industry for wanting younger models. Madonna is kind of the prime example of why you should allow yourself to age gracefully and not put those weird chemicals into your body to alter your look. It's a young person's world and our generation and maybe the generation prior have a big issue with accepting you can't be young forever.zombie wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:48 pmthe "beauty standard" is youth or the appearance of youth. aging gracefully in the public eye goes against the beauty standard. or at least that is the way it seems to me. i haven't seen substance yet, but x touched on that too in a way. being comfortable in your own body rather than trying to hold on to youth because that's what you're encouraged to do culturally.Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:39 pmNo spoilers, but Demi Moore's character from the very beginning is struggling with getting older, wishing she were young and resenting the industry for wanting younger models. Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
yeah, i've noticed it with courteney cox, meg ryan and others too. aging gracefully should be the standard. let people just be people. don't chase youth, either in your own body or in others as you grow older.Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 12:57 pmMadonna is kind of the prime example of why you should allow yourself to age gracefully and not put those weird chemicals into your body to alter your look. I cannot decide between
When Evil Lurks (new viewing)
Pulse (2001 Japanese version) (new viewing)
Salem's Lot
Alien
for the next viewing I'm gonna start in the next hour or two.

Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
i like alien best of those four, as far as i've seen them (i'm into when evil lurks but haven't finished it yet)
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
When Evil Lurks
Has some high promise to it from what I've read from people who've seen it. So it's gonna get put in at some point in this challenge.
Pulse
Got a blind buy from me when I encountered a random youtube video breaking down the scariest scene in the movie. I barely got into the video before I decided to shut it off and just buy the movie. It was really intriguing and I forgot most of what I saw.
Salem's Lot
I saw it about ten years ago or so and I think it was the only time I watched it, but I remember being pretty blown away at how great of a vampire movie it was and I want to see if I feel the same.
Alien
And also Aliens are long overdue for a rewatch. It's been probably more than ten years since I've seen both and while I enjoyed Alien to an extent, even with multiple viewings it just didn't hold up to the hype, and I preferred Aliens every time. But it's been so long that they're both in need of a reevaluation.
Re: 2024 October Challenge Discussion Thread
yeah, aliens makes my top 10 horror flicks. i prefer it to the original. for awhile i didn't really care for alien but i've come to find that both are cool stuff.Jason wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 1:15 pmWhen Evil Lurks

i think you should watch as many of them for the challenge as you can. and i probably need to give salem's lot another chance myself.

Wait, are you watching When Evil Lurks right now?
