New era of censorship
It is pretty clear we are entering a new era of censorship. In the past it was the government, but this time it will be media conglomerates. So many properties are now owned by these conglomerates, and we are seeing a mass sanitization.
Old movies, shows, episodes, are disappearing far more rapidly than the public is even noticing. Entire genres will be lost, a mere footnote in history.
You down?

Re: New era of censorship
is this actual censorship or more a perceived lack of exposure and recognition in the general public?
Re: New era of censorship
It is a deliberate attempt to eliminate the media from the public realm. Themes, characters, etc. no longer considered appropriate, etc.zombie wrote:is this actual censorship or more a perceived lack of exposure and recognition in the general public?
We are losing a lot for other reasons as well, including complicated rights issues of the film itself, music in the films, lack of perceived interest.
Another more recent phenomenon is catering to the international market. Giving countries like China final decisions on what the film can include.

about the chinese approval thing, is that to do with movies made by chinese studios that hollywood is also involved with or what?
and if there is censorship going on, or even films and tv being lost for other reasons, do you feel like something should be done to counter that, or is it just something that we have to accept and lament?
Re: New era of censorship
Just anything not considered politically correct. Certain depictions of slavery, sexism, stereotypes, etc. The famous example is Song of the South, but there are countless others that get no attention because they are not Disney animation. Blaxploitation from the 70's is being completely erased.zombie wrote:which characters, themes, and whatever else you lumped into etc?Foo wrote:It is a deliberate attempt to eliminate the media from the public realm. Marvel Studios has members of the Chinese Communist Party review scripts, are on set, and often give final approval.
Nope, just accept it. It is not your media to control.
Re: New era of censorship
it is a little bit weird if marvel gets approval on scripts from the chinese government. is that why the mandarin was deflated in iron man 3? or did it start happening after that film?Foo wrote:Just anything not considered politically correct. if there's nothing that can be done to raise the awareness of the movies or whatever, then what did you create the topic for? what is there to debate or discuss? is this just so that we can all cry foul on liberal censorship, how we're just doomed?
i'm gonna go watch breakfast at tiffany's, to keep yellowface alive.
Re: New era of censorship
Iron Man 3 did have a lot of Chinese influence, on product placement, casting, plot, etc. They also added some scenes with Chinese actors for the chinese release. Not sure it bothers me, I just like to be aware of it.zombie wrote:it is a little bit weird if marvel gets approval on scripts from the chinese government. is that why the mandarin was deflated in iron man 3? or did it start happening after that film?Foo wrote:Just anything not considered politically correct. I created the topic for discussion. I think losing art is sad. I said nothing of liberals. I am sorry you have to see everything as a left-right issue.
Re: New era of censorship
losing art is definitely sad. and there are things we can do to raise awareness. as long as things aren't actually banned, essentially, like song of the south, you can still talk about it and let people know about cool stuff that they're missing. if you really wanted to keep it from being lost, you could help to counter that at least to some degree.Foo wrote:

Re: New era of censorship
We are basically one generation from losing most of it. Young blacks are not even aware of the great blaxploitation movies.zombie wrote:losing art is definitely sad. and there are things we can do to raise awareness. as long as things aren't actually banned, essentially, like song of the south, you can still talk about it and let people know about cool stuff that they're missing. if you really wanted to keep it from being lost, you could help to counter that at least to some degree.Foo wrote:

Song of the South was an amazing movie for its time, and it is gone. Looney Toons are sanitized, Hannah Barbara is sanitized. Even WWE is bring sanitized of people, plots, and music.
Re: New era of censorship
well, give your top 5-10? i'm not really aware of that subgenre either. what should i keep an eye out for? and if it turns out that it's not available, that will be worth discussing.Foo wrote:We are basically one generation from losing most of it. Re: New era of censorship
If you are really interested, I suggest researching the genre. The top tier is being saved to some extent. Stuff that broke into the mainstream like Shaft, Superfly, Blacula, and Sweet Badasss Song. It is the lesser known stuff like Black Cream, Solomon King, The Hangout, Trouble Man, Wattstax, The Harder they Come, etc.zombie wrote:well, give your top 5-10? i'm not really aware of that subgenre either. what should i keep an eye out for? and if it turns out that it's not available, that will be worth discussing.Foo wrote:We are basically one generation from losing most of it. This is not even taking into consideration that on tv, you will be spoonfed the Shawshank Redemption, Madea Family Reunion, and Scary Movie 2 ten million times but will never see Boss Nigger, The Legend of Nigger Charlie, or JDs Revenge.
Re: New era of censorship
i am interested. at least i tried to get a starting point. lesser known does not necessarily mean banned or censored.Foo wrote: If you are really interested, I suggest researching the genre. if you're talking tv specifically, that's something else altogether. basket case is never gonna be played on tv either. but parent trap will be all the time. i think you can see the difference.
Re: New era of censorship
Ok, it is nothing for you to be concerned with. Carry on.
Basket Case is on Netflix and Blu Ray. I am talking about the films lost or getting lost, not the cult classics that already survived. I think you are missing the point.
"Silent films are not lost! I just saw a Buster Keaton collection at Walmart!"

Re: New era of censorship
okay. if you're gonna play the defeatist attitude, feel free. all i said was forgotten or lesser known does not necessarily mean censored or banned. and i also suggested reminding people of the films, if you feel like it's something worth remembering or saving. but fair enough. carry on, foo.
Re: New era of censorship
gonna go watch ganja and hess now, in honor of this thread.
Re: New era of censorship
Again, you are totally missing the point. You are pointing to films that are not forgotten. I am talking about the thousands that are lost or rotting in vaults for various reasons.zombie wrote:okay. if you're gonna play the defeatist attitude, feel free. all i said was forgotten or lesser known does not necessarily mean censored or banned. and i also suggested reminding people of the films, if you feel like it's something worth remembering or saving. but fair enough. carry on, foo.
Basket Case is well known within the genre and on many top lists. I am talking about the ten thousand horror movies we don't know, not the three thousand we do.
Re: New era of censorship
and now you're stuck on basket case. that one is neither censored, nor forgotten among horror fans. can we move past that one?Foo wrote:Again, you are totally missing the point. i have no doubt that some movies have been censored. (song of the south, definitely) but i do not think that every movie "rotting in vaults" has been censored.
and again, if you want movies to be remembered, remind people of them. recommend them to your friends. if you don't have the time, that's fair too. just trying to find something productive, in regard to your topic.
Re: New era of censorship
Look up the stories about Cry Baby Lane and Night Circus. Then consider all the movies that are just slightly less famous. All those are gone.
Re: New era of censorship
we are in agreement that films and tv shows do become lost, and more are just forgotten along the way. some you'll never be able to save, as you weren't even aware of their existence. absolutely. but many are still there, to be found, if you remind people of them, or recommend them to people. obscure or lesser known does not have to mean lost, necessarily.
Re: New era of censorship
You have to focus on things that never made it to home media. Then look at the thousands that never made the jump from VHS.
