who did you use for reference on the face? she looks familiar, but i can't place it. forgive me, if you've already answered this.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:First sketching of my graphic novel project. Shared because of the Jason forehead triangle reference I mentioned yesterday. Plus I used the Thorn rune in the sword too.

it's always hard reading back through what you've written. glad you're liking it more.Dream wrote:Working on third draft of novels.

I loosely used a picture of Joi from Bladerunner 2049, but it was at a different angle. No one has asked until now.zombie wrote:who did you use for reference on the face? she looks familiar, but i can't place it. forgive me, if you've already answered this.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:First sketching of my graphic novel project. i can see the resemblance there, after looking her up. i don't think i've actually seen any of her movies, aside from trailers. but then maybe that's why i couldn't place it.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I loosely used a picture of Joi from Bladerunner 2049, but it was at a different angle. Re: December 19th
I like to "cast" my characters, and with this one I decided that actress would be the best model. Though when producing, I will not be using direct references for the drawings (would take too long and could become inconsistent. Besides, I never liked comic art that used a person's likeness too much and often, like Greg Land - who I think got outted as a tracer), but I would practice and kinda get used to her features.zombie wrote:i can see the resemblance there, after looking her up. i don't think i've actually seen any of her movies, aside from trailers. but then maybe that's why i couldn't place it.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I loosely used a picture of Joi from Bladerunner 2049, but it was at a different angle. yeah, i like to cast my characters too. it helps to make a better picture of them in my mind. and like you, it's not meant to be exact likeness. well, except in specific cases i want it to really resemble a specific person.DancesWithWerewolves wrote:I like to "cast" my characters, and with this one I decided that actress would be the best model. Holy crap, I went to double check if Greg Land is in fact a tracer (he always looked like one) but apparently it's very common these days now to trace. No wonder many comics look bland to me these days. They call it "phototracing".
Wow.
Wow.

i don't see a problem with photo-tracing a landscape or backdrop. but characters should be done by eye. it shouldn't be something exactly taken from an existing actor or model.

Yeah, I agree. Often tracing for backgrounds helped with deadlines, because you can go nuts trying to nail the perspective if every damn building, etc.zombie wrote:i don't see a problem with photo-tracing a landscape or backdrop. but characters should be done by eye. it shouldn't be something exactly taken from an existing actor or model.
I wonder if never got picked up at Marvel, DC, Top Cow, Dreamwave or Darkhorse because I didn't do tracing.
Re: December 19th
that could be a reason. that video said it's a common practice with the cityscape.
also, never heard of dreamwave. gonna have to look that company up.

They're the studio that was doing Transformers for a while there when they were a comeback. Pat Lee was their flagship artist.
