A couple months ago in Santa Ana, about an hour from me, a dude was robbing a local fast food restaurant and someone at the drive thru window pulled his gun out and shot the robber from the window, then fled the scene. Everyone in the youtube comments section is asking why the dude left. Well, it's because this is California, and the dude that perhaps saved the cashier's life would've went to prison. Robber probably would've sued, too.

The store owner should not punch people. In truth he probably doesn’t need to emerge from the store once the merchandise is returned. He definitely shouldn’t confront them. So a child makes an honest mistake, a mom returns it hastily. That should be the end of the story. Could she have apologized more profusely and handed it back nicely, 100%. Throwing it in is a dick move that shows a lack of remorse. But that’s as far as that goes. Everything after that is all in the store owner.
