Lucky Town
album: Lucky Town (1992)
The entire album of Lucky Town was written in three weeks by Bruce Springsteen in his home.
"These are the stories I have to tell, This is what's important in my life, right now. This is
A pretty country-sounding tune to me, and I was impressed to find out that Bruce played every
Instrument on this album except for the drums. It's a got a great sound and excellent lyricism
As always. It never gets old.
Well, I had some victory that was just failure in deceit
Now the joke's coming up through the soles of my feet
I been a long time walking on fortune's cane
Well, tonight, I'm stepping lightly and feeling no pain

Brilliant Disguise
album: Tunnel Of Love (1987)
There's speculation about the meaning behind this song and how it could mean more than Bruce
Has ever let on. The majority of these songs on the Tunnel Of Love album consist of the hardships
Occurring between Bruce and his wife, Julianne Phillips. She is an actress, and the idea of the meaning
Behind "Brilliant Disguise" is that Bruce may have had trust issues with Julianne Phillips and she was able
To hide behind her brilliant disguise. This is not confirmed, but what Bruce has said about this song is
"I guess it sounds like a song of betrayal - who's that person sleeping next to me, who am I? Do I know
Enough about myself to be honest with that person? But a funny thing happens: songs shift their meanings
When you sing them, they shift their meanings in time, they shift their meanings with who you sing them
With. When you sing this song with someone you love, it turns into something else."
God have mercy on the man who doubts what he's sure of

Two Faces
album: Tunnel Of Love (1987)
I would most likely consider Two Faces to be Bruce Springsteen's most overlooked song in
His catalog. Bruce's intentions behind the lyrics was to write a different kind of romantic
Song. One that took in the different types of emotional experiences of any relationship
Where you are really engaging with that person. Addressing the negativity in the relationship
As it conflicts with the love they have for each other. It's possibly the most bleakest song He's
Ever written. It's very easy to listen to and engage with.
At night I get down on my knees and pray
Our love will make that other man go away
But he'll never say goodbye
Two faces have I

As the countdown gets closer and closer to the end, I'm curious if anyone has some favorite Springsteen tunes, and whether or not they've made the list (yet) or not...

Youngstown
album: The Ghost Of Tom Joad (1995)
One of Bruce's central themes in his music is the representation of the working class, blue-collar men.
If there is one song that fits the personification of the working class in Bruce Springsteen's catalog, it
Would be this song, Youngstown. Youngstown, Ohio was one of the most prominent areas for steel-workers
Anywhere in the world. Over the years, as the wars came to an end, there was nothing left for these
steel-workers to do. Many were part of the steel trade for generations and had to completely restart their lives.
Bruce tells their stories here. There's a line in the song that reads "My sweet Jenny, I'm sinking down",
Indicating the narrator may be talking to his wife, but in reality, "Jenny" was the nickname given to the Blast Furnace
At Youngstown steelworks - The Jeanette Blast Furnace. It's common practice to nickname the machines
They would work on every day. "Fire up the Jenny!"
When I die I don't want no part of heaven
I would not do heaven's work well
I pray the devil comes and takes me
To stand in the fiery furnaces of hell

The Promised Land
album: Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978)
Bruce wanted to tone down the scale of the big sound from the previous album (Born To Run), and this was
One of the faster-paced songs of the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album that transitioned into that point.
He was really inspired folk-rock and said this song was the result of a road trip that he took before making
The album. Another relatable tune, this song is about the American worker who's growing tired of chasing the
Dream and left "lost and broken-hearted". The upbeat lyricism provide an inspiring sound that I really enjoy.
I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just wanna' explode

My Hometown
album: Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
A pretty straight-forward message, this song is about growing up in a small town and watching it change
For the worse as you get older. This was Bruce Springsteen's account of growing up in Freehold, New
Jersey. When you listen to the song, he mentions "two cars at a light on a Saturday night, in the backseat
There was a gun." This was an actual incident he witnessed in 1965. I'm sure it was at this moment that he
Knew it was time to get out of that place. My Hometown is one of the dozen or so songs from Bruce Springsteen
That I've known for as long as I can remember. My Dad once let me steer through the neighborhood as a very
Young boy and as I got older, and Bruce Springsteen became a prominent presence in my music, I would listen
To this song and often think of that moment. Though, now, it's a pretty foggy blur, but I do remember pieces of it.
Last night me and Kate we laid in bed
Talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
I'm thirty-five, we got a boy of out own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel
and said, "Son take a good look around, this is your hometown"

No Surrender
album: Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
No Surrender might be Springsteen's most youthful song. It's about how powerful the inspiration of
Music can be. It was the final track chosen for the Born In The U.S.A. album, barely making the cut.
For me, this is one of those songs that's so fast-paced, but if you hear the song enough times you're
Able to follow and sing along and it makes the song that much better.
We learned more from a three minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school

Stand On It
Stand On It - Single (1985)
The fourth and final single release from Springsteen to make my list. The rest of the songs on the list
From here on out will be album releases only. Just like No Surrender, Stand On It is one of those songs
Where if you listen to it enough and get to know the words, it's an absolute blast to follow and sing along.
Stand On It was a rejected song from the Born In The U.S.A. album, but found it's way into the list by
Bursting onto the scene in 1985 as a B-Side single to Glory Days. It's the most fast-paced song in Bruce
Springsteen's entire catalog and there's no denying the fun. Just try sitting still while listening to this song.
Well if you've lost control of the situation at hand
Go grab a girl; go see a rock and roll band

Cover Me
album: Born In The U.S.A. (1984)
When compiling this list, I rediscovered the love and appreciation that I have for this song that
I had, about ten years back, when this album was constantly getting replayed on my long commute
To and from work. I knew it would fall somewhere in the top 50, but before compiling the list, I don't
Think I could've guessed I'd place it as high as 13, but here it is. And it feels so right putting it here.
I have an old Rolling Stones magazine from a few years back where they create a top 100 ranking of
Bruce's discography, and Cover Me didn't make the list. It's hard for me to argue against any Bruce Springsteen
List, because he's got such a massive catalog of music that I love, but this one not making the top 100 is surprising.
Cover Me is the second track of the album and it is one of the most badass, rocking tunes in his entire catalog.
This whole world is out there just trying to score
I've seen enough, I don't want to see any more

Racing In The Street
album: Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978)
If there's any one song in Bruce's catalog that can describe my current predicament, it's this one.
I've mentioned before that he's essentially written about everything I've ever experienced in some
Way or another, and I'd like to preface this by saying that I'm not drag racer, but Racing In The Street
Is about a small-time drag-racer who dreams of a better life somewhere else. It's a brutally honest
Description of young man's very-American desire to leave his town and experience life elsewhere,
Outside of that soul-killing life that surrounds him every day.
I'm tired of this desert wasteland, ladies and gentlemen. I'm ready to go Racing In The Street.
Some guys they just give up living
And start dying little by little, piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
Then go racing in the street

Re: COUNTDOWN: Top 50 Bruce Springsteen Songs
I've oddly kind of enjoyed putting this together. I always dread lists, but the idea that maybe some day some of you guys will really start getting heavily into Springsteen's lineup of tunes and come to this thread to get my take on songs you've been digging is kind of what's been driving me to finish it.
Fun stuff. Very cool. Thanks for tuning in.
