This is all irresponsible speculation on my part, but Whedon strikes me as the type of guy who would project his brand of feminism in every direction, and then when he actually gets women in the room with him he becomes weird, creepy, maybe even a bit obsessive/possessive. That's not an uncommon quality in filmmakers (*cough* Hitchcock *cough*) but it seems to me that Whedon has been pretty manipulative with his platform.
"Misidentification
In November 2013 it was reported that Watkins had been receiving hate mail through Twitter from people confusing him with Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins, who had recently pleaded guilty to 11 sex offences involving children. Watkins received a public apology in court from E! Entertainment Television for their having used his photo to illustrate a story about the other Watkins. Watkins was also said to be "furious" and pursuing legal action after his image appeared next to stories about the other Watkins' crimes through searches on Google News."

Oh man that sucks. That's so wrong. If it's the guy I was thinking of, he's done a few comedy music shows and is genuinely a lovely guy. This lost prophets guy sounds like the cunt of cunts. Finally found a link to the guy and he sounds massively ducking creepy. Happy to not think about him again.
